I was in High School in the San Francisco Bay Area 1969-1973. Music was about the musicians playing music. There weren't dancers, flashing lights, fireworks at the concerts, just the musicians. People were employed. The population of the U.S. was 207 million. Immigration was at low levels. The Vietnam War was in its final years. Don Mclean wrote the song "American Pie" in 1971.

When he says "How can you be as nice as me, you're not from the same slice as me", he is REALIZING that people from all times can be as awesome as him, and his "slice" is no longer seen as special. Thus, he wants a song about a time when he and his peers were "more than just a slice of American pie"
