Your voiceover of Ultima Online was a thing of beauty. And yes, I think the bases being partially destructible, or falling gradually to ruin when unoccupied _per shard_ is a better approach than pristine, invulnerable but obviously abandoned bases.

I remember the days of Ultima, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies and also dial-up Internet. I actually loved that sound because I imagined I was whooshing through a confined space and then when the static came I had arrived in a virtual ocean. The Internet is so cool.

I don't think I ever played Ultima Online. I recall spending hours playing Ultima VIII: Pagan, which was awesome.

Again, really great info in this video. This is the kind of stuff that CIG really needs to do a better job explaining so I'm glad you and others like you are doing the lords work. I remember playing Ultima Online when I was but a young nugget but before I got into game development I never really thought about server meshing, shards, replication, etc. Thanks for breaking it down!

One thing I'd love to see is that when a player logs out in their shard their body drops to the floor unconscious. If they log out in a bed then they'll stay in that bed until they log back in. If you get shot while logged out and someone takes all your stuff then so be it. That's the risk you run when you choose where you log out.

I played only a little of Ultima Online and grew weary of many aspects of traditional MMO's in years of playing Lord of the Rings Online. I keep hoping that Star Citizen retains more of a sandbox, player driven feel than a quest driven feel.

Appreciate your content - especially your ability to explain complex stuff like this.
