"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson is a classic American short story about a small village with a strange tradition. Every year, the villagers gather in the town square for a lottery. This event seems ordinary at first, but it has a shocking and dark purpose.

The story begins on a bright and sunny summer day. The children play, and the adults talk and laugh. Everyone gathers, and Mr. Summers, who runs the lottery, arrives with a black box. Inside the box are small slips of paper. Each family must pick one slip of paper from the box.

As the story continues, we learn that the lottery is not about winning a prize. Instead, the person who "wins" is chosen for something terrible.
