The anticipation was palpable at Eastgate Square in Hamilton on Saturday as kids small and tall waited for the arrival of Santa Claus to tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

Festive entertainers at the mall delighted dozens of children while carolers belted out Christmas classics.

Santa Claus arrived along with Mrs. Claus, parading through the mall with his helpers, giving out hugs and high fives and spreading Christmas cheer.

After walking the mall, Santa arrived at his workshop to begin speaking with the children.

Santa was also helping spread the word about the CHCH Christmas Toy Drive, which runs in Hamilton and Niagara until Dec. 19.

"It's so important for our community, for our station, and this year the need is so great,” CHCH News Director, Greg O’Brien said. “We do stories daily about recession and how difficult it is for some families to afford the basic necessities."

Hamilton families with children in need between the ages of two and twelve can register to receive a toy by calling the hotline at 289-698-6749, or Niagara residents can physically register in person at the Seaway Mall in Welland.

The Toy Drive is made possible by the hard work of the East Hamilton Optimist Club.

"Last year we helped out 339 families which was 833 children…” Assistant Coordinator of the East Hamilton Optimist Club, Charles Manning said. “And that wouldn't have happened without companies donating and also the people of the city."

The toy drive is a chance for community members to come together during difficult times and try to be a little like Santa Claus ourselves.
