Tengnga Ti Baybay - Mary Cornelio and Florante Aguilar (Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte Performance)

Impromptu singing with Mary Cornelio, who happened to be the chef of the house we were staying in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. Mary introduced me and the crew to the wonderful Ilocano cuisine. Oh, and she can sing too.

Preservation of culture. This is what our country needs but with rising corruption and lack of education led to the decline of cultural development. I am a musician and I left the Philippines in 2000 to seek greener pastures because in the central islands there was no sense of cultural change and people have become so immersed with western music brought about by social media. Our country has gone to the dogs…from the family unit, to small baranggays, to town to provincial leaders. It’s simply falling down and held captive by westernized cultural revolution. How sad indeed. I promised myself to come back and help restore one tiny fraction of musical reversal but I don’t know…..God help me.

I dont speak or understand Ilokano but my father did. Somehow even just the melody of the song got me in tears. Beautiful. Singing is definitely our peoples gift from the Lord.

When I was young I used to listen to this music and ilocano drama on the radio. Thanks to the internet I can listen again and it brings tears in my eyes. There is no radio station here Texas that play the songs perhaps the state of Hawaii do due to large number of ilocano population.

I love how this song is very similar to the Bicol folk song "Hilong Pagkamoot." The theme of the song and its melody. Kudos to you ate for singing that wonderful song.
