What next for APPLE M1?

preview_player
Показать описание
Is it possible to make some reasonable predictions for the next version of Apple's Silicon for Macs? Will it be an M1X, M1 Pro, or M2? How much RAM should we expect, and how many CPU and GPU cores?

In this video, I try to look at what makes sense from a technical and business perspective to make a few predictions. What do you think?

What a breath of fresh air. Calm and well reasoned, it's like listening to a Zen master as opposed to the usual "Fire and Brimstone" preacher style on other YouTube channels.

This is one of the best M1 videos I've seen yet

I just wanted to write in to say that you deserve a much larger audience. It's so great to have a tech youtube channel that isn't constantly screaming, speaking at 190wpm, or using the words "leak bomb" in every video headline. Well done and I wish you tremendous success. Keep doing what you're doing and the subscribers will come.

Still the best Apple YT channel going!

I don't even have a Mac (PC man) and yet I really enjoyed the video. The M1 looks great and has huge potential for the future,

"Mobile" is the key....performance per unit of power rather than raw horsepower will attract consumers and will offer the most choice in form factors moving forward....for increased "desktop" performance, is it possible that future Macs will hand-off rendering and other computational-intensive tasks to a second (third...) SoC residing in the same box? I am not a hardware engineer but it seems that Pro-level Macs with with Multiple SoCs communicating over a dedicated data bus may allow Apple to offer units that can scale according to customer needs and budgets.

hit the nail on the head with this one.

Whilst the graphics performance of the M1 chip isnt quite up to standard when comparing with AMD and Nvidia don’t forget this is Apple‘s first attempt at silicon. In the first few weeks of the M1 being launched people were utterly blown away by its speed so it is perfectly logical to expect the second generation of M chips to take our breath away yet again. Camera technology is becoming so advanced with 12K sensors on a £10K camera that this monumental leap in speed is necessary. Apple will not disappoint.

32 gigs and Cubase native and I’m there

Okay
I am making 3 Assumptions here
1. Scaling multicore is 80% improvement when doubling the amount of HP Cores
2. The 3NM Proces will bring improvement in speed, with the same power use
3. Improvement in desing of the the cores will also bring 10%

M1 4 High Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 4 GPU Cores
Geekbench:
Singe core: 1.709
Multi Core: 7.398
Metal Score: 21.982

M1X 8 High Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 8 GPU Cores (hypothetical mid 2021)
Singe core: 1.709
Multi Core: 13.300 (+80%)
Metal Score: 43.964 (Double M1)

M1Y High 16 Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 16 GPU Cores (hypothetical end 2021)
Singe core: 1.709
Multi Core: 23.940 (+80% M1x)
Metal Score: 78.649 (Double M1x)

M2, The next generation, build on 3NM technology, Acording to TSMC this will bring: 10–15% (1.10–1.15×) increase in performance. Let’s say 10%. So, include another 10% for design improvement, and we are at 20% improvement.

4 High Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 4 GPU Cores (hypothetical 2022)
Geekbench:
Singe core: 2.050
Multi Core: 8.877
Metal Score: 26.378

M2X 8 High Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 8 GPU Cores (hypothetical 2022)
Singe core: 2050
Multi Core: 16.000
Metal Score: 52.756

M2Y High 16 Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 16 GPU Cores (hypothetical 2022)
Singe core: 2050
Multi Core: 29.880 (+80% M2x)
Metal Score: 105.512 (Double M2x)

M2Z High 32 Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 32 GPU Cores (hypothetical 2023)
Singe core: 2050
Multi Core: 53.800 (+80% M2y)
Metal Score: 210.000 (Double M2z)

M2 ZZ High 64 Performance Cores, 4 Energy Cores, 64 GPU Cores (hypothetical 2023)
Singe core: 2050
Multi Core: 96.800 (+80% M2z)
Metal Score: 420.000 (Double M2z)

When Apple is going to release SOC on the mac the same way as on the phone, every year an incrementation, the the M1 will be replaced by the M2, the M1x by the M2x etc. So every year will see a new model SOC like on the iPhone. This is what Intel could not deliver and the reason Apple left Intel.

There will certainly need to be a hierarchy, with regard to the chips. Not much point in paying more for essentially, the same performance. I am holding out for the 16" MacBook Pro. I'd love it to have up to 64 gigs of memory (yes, I know I am asking too much, in all probability), as I am a 3D artist and need as much RAM as I can get! 32 gigs would still be four times what I am currently working with, though.

I love this quiet room for discussion. Performance will be stunning for a laptop considering the amount of power comsumpion too, I agree that maybe Apple will delivery two version of M1X, as everybody call it now, a low end and a high end. In both case the step forward in performance will be huge compared with the actual one. Confirmed leakers suggest that the selection of port will be modified with the introduction of a Magsafe for power, probably an SD card slot, very useful for a great numbers of people that are camera users, and a HDMI port for external monitors. The last one maybe is related to the fact that the USB 4 connection seems not very reliable for video, or maybe is the easiest and cheapest way to run multiple monitors on a laptop. The iMac line will be like the Macbook Pro, the entry level with a M1 due to the fact that the entry level is priced $1100, 00 and the small one with the same M1X of the 14" Macbook and the big one like the 16", and maybe the rumored discrete graphic for the bigger. I also expect a beefer version of the Mini with the low specs M1X, in substitution of the actual Intel model. The transition is very nice for speculation.

I feel you have given a most realistic prediction based on real world facts and possibilities, and not the wild hopes & dreams so many others have put out there. Thank you!

8:45 I assume the Bluetooth and Wi-FI issues can be fixed with software updates. In fact, Big Sur 11.2.1 dealt with bluetooth problems that users have experienced with M1, especially macMini M1.
