During the European expansion into North America, salt and pepper was stocked in the most remote trading posts for trappers because it was used to preserve animal skins. Salt was rubbed on the flesh side to draw out moisture and prevent spoilage, while pepper was rubbed on the hair side to repel carpet beetles. The skins could be stored for several months this way so long as they were kept dry.

Please increase the duration of the video and reduce the speed of presentation accordingly for the benefit of most viewers notwithstanding the appearance of English titles.
