this sound woke me up like ten minutes ago and at first i thought it was trees squeaking together or something, but then i decided to finally use the merlin bird id app and it told me the squawking was an owl! i didn’t know they make these noises! this makes me so excited though because i love owls

Heard a honk like sound repeating middle of night, then hoot, then honk, then farther away a squeek. There are barn, screech and great horned owls around. They look like flying ghosts at night.

Save you time
@00:24 and @00:54 are the only times. And it's more of a squeak, not a bark. Like weak wind thru pipes

Ive always felt comforted around these birds. Whenever I’m at my lowest point, In tears in the darkness of my room in the early morning, these beautiful creatures sing a love song outside of my window.
It happened this morning at around 4:25am, suddenly I heard the warm song of one’s hoots, It stayed for about five minutes just singing. Then a ridiculously loud diesel truck drove down my street and the bird was gone.
I just wish I could see one of them one day, every time I hear one I am too scared to breathe too loud because they know when something is there.

An excellent video of Great Horned Owl. Nature is so beautiful. I love your content. Great and wonderful video. Best of luck.

That sound is just a weak version of the food-begging call of young-of-the-year great-horned owls, so my guess is it's an instinct from when it was younger which is not quite fully suppressed at this moment. This video was shot in the spring, and if that bird was a youngster the previous year, then this is only a few months past the time when it would have been normal and expected for the bird to still be begging for food from its parents, as they do keep begging for food right into the early part of winter, long after their parents stop feeding them.

I was visiting "my Owls" that I sponsor at a local nature center and the male GHO was making this sound today along with his usual cute hoots.

That is not a "bark." They do bark, but that is not the sound.

I heard a great horned owl while I was putting up Christmas lights on my house. I live in a suburb next to a first preserve, so we get hawks, coyotes, and other wildlife in the burbs all the time. Hell, I nearly caused a school bus I was on to wreck after spotting a bald eagle (we all moved to one side of the bus suddenly while it was making a turn, lol). Anyway, it was quite loud, so I figured it was nearby. So I followed the noise into my nextdoor neighbor's yard and looked up. It was sitting right there, right on the roof. It was huge. Soon as he noticed me, he took off. I tracked his flight and saw him land on a tree, only to realize he'd landed next to his mate, who also did a bowing hoot as he landed next to her. So cool.

Some alarm. The mockingbird's alarm call is more impressive. "Chit! Chit!"
