Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), which operates Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, has suspended preparations for the test removal of nuclear fuel debris. Radiation levels from the debris are so high that the company has had to develop specialised robots to operate inside, but an installation error has led to the delay. An earthquake and tsunami that hit Fukushima prefecture in 2011 led to a meltdown of the Daiichi power plant, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Japan began releasing treated nuclear waste water from the plant into the Pacific Ocean on August 24, 2023, as part of a decades-long clean up effort.

Also, that 880 ton figure only represents the fuel mass. Literally every piece of metal in there is also highly radioactive and will need dealt with as well. So it's more like 2600 tons conservative estimate.

there is still contamination outside of the reactor.

What a High Level of incompetence. To put the pipes wrong .

0:15 Fantastic view of what looks like the direct underside of a reactor. some meaty damage there.

Tell me, Why does a RBMK reactor explode?

The disaster was incompetence, clearing it up is incompetence as well. What a series.
Build a nuclear plant near ocean and protect it against squirts only.

You didn't see graphite! You didn't because its not there!

Yeah let's put the generator's in the basement, what could possibly go wrong, with the ocean just a stone's throw away???😅

The Chernobylite in the reactor buildings at Fukushima must contain a much higher percentage of Uranium plus fission products than the Chernobylite in the reactor building at Chernobyl. If the Chernobylite is covered by water, a chain reaction can start and more highly radioactive but short lived fission products will be produced. Adding neutron poisons such as boron should suppress any further chain reaction and enable radioactive decay to gradually reduce radiation levels in the reactor buildings.

Imagine what 10 years of structural corrosion will have caused.

Where would they dispose of those debris ? Not the ocean i hope.

Comparing it to chernobyl is massively far fetched its not remotely close

come on guys, it's not the biggest nuclear cleanup you've ever had to do

Who with sane mind builds a nuclear power plant on a territory with both earthquakes and tsunamis?!!

I admire Japanese people, but come on...

Why is there not more international cooperation? This catastrophy affect us all not only the Japanese

Some true heroes sacrificed themselves those days to prevent disaster. ❤

Nuclear physicists, smart enough to run a nuclear power plant but dumb enough to place fuel tanks for cooling pumps in a vulnerable position.

I cant fathom why they built it next to the ocean when it was only a matter of time before an earthquake caused a tsunami
