This only works when the lift is stopped at a floor. If you do this while the lift is moving, it will break the safety circuit, which makes the lift stop immediately. You could also get stuck in the lift (some lifts shut down when safety is violated).

The safety circuit is the same thing that prevents the lift from moving unless both the inner and all outer doors are locked.

If the lift is inactive at a floor, the doors are unlocked, which allows someone to manually open them. The lift may also turn on the door operator to finish the door-opening sequence.
