At any moment, there is an electrical storm coursing through your body. Discover how chemical reactions create an electric current that drives our responses to everything from hot pans to a mother's caress.

A way better definition in under 5 minutes than my school could teach in four years.

Dear lord our bodies are amazing.

I WANT TO SEE AN ENTIRE NEUROSCIENCE COURSE LIKE THIS.

I think it's important to note that the Sodium/Potasium pumps are working constantly and don't just turn on. They're used to maintain the concentration gradient by pumping out 3Na molecules for every 2K molecules pumped in.

Thanks TED! Your TedEds will find their way to my classroom to wake up high school seniors every now and again!

Thanks a ton for the polarisation process :) I literally had been banging my head around for straight 4 hours.

And basically all of this happens in a fraction of a fraction of a second, maybe even faster. I’m speechless.

Perfect review of the action potential of a neuron. I really did enjoy this. It made me remember everything I learned from class too.

I'm glad to have learned this in school. I love biology, too.

The sensation of pain and fear can actually occur before the brain is aware of it actually. If something burns you, reflexes move you away. When something like a bug (if you're afraid of bugs) brushes your leg, you may yank your leg away. Then a nerve impulse travels to the brain, making you aware of what happened. You can also feel pleasure without knowing the possible dangers of the stimuli. It is still possible for the brain to perceive stimuli differently based on past events with it.

Nerves don't generate pain, threat, or pleasure. They communicate information to the brain. The brain interprets the information and generated a response: pain, threat, pleasure.

After reading this paper, I have realized how complex and multidimensional synapse formation and neuronal activity are. I am impressed by how precisely synapse generation is regulated by neuronal activity and how this process is far from straightforward. The autonomous mechanisms of neurons and the changes occurring during their development underscore the complexity and sophistication of neuroscience.

The fact that excitatory and inhibitory synapses express different proteins and behave differently further enhances my understanding of the diversity and intricacy of the nervous system. Additionally, I believe that the signaling mechanisms during the early stages of neural development are crucial for understanding the formation and functionality of the nervous system.

In the future, I aim to conduct research on synapse formation and neuronal activity to better understand the formation and function of neural circuits. By utilizing advanced technologies such as fluorescent labeling, I plan to precisely investigate neuronal activity. I also intend to design and conduct various experiments to explore the autonomous mechanisms of neurons.

Ultimately, through this research, I hope to contribute to the field of neuroscience and assist in identifying the causes and potential treatments for neurological disorders. Understanding these intricate processes at a deeper level will be pivotal in advancing our knowledge of the nervous system and improving therapeutic approaches for neural diseases.

That was a great explanation of nerves and neurons. Thanks for showing.

Very interesting. I would be very interested to see what the nerves are during during a shingles outbreak and how to bring them back into balance/health. Also, the volume seemed fairly low on this video. Thanks!

Conventionally, animations are made after the voice recording... so it is very possible that it was a deaf animator instead.

Well, that cleared some stuff up. . .
Here I was thinking that ion pumps operated when the nerve fired, not to exert the work of rebounding the nerve back to its resting state. But the more I think about it, the more sense that makes.

That synaptic transmission is great after you consume the good stuff.
