I read all these comment and I want to say, "Thank You." I love people who love movies! Ebert once remarked that he knew his purpose in life. He was here to review movies. He was a touch-stone for me. My Top-10 list would be almost completely different from his but I always wanted to know what he thought about any movie.

I really do miss him and SIskel. They were so entertaining to watch, and as you had stated, being able to talk about movies in a "simple fashion" made my teenage brain easy to understand what they were saying and why it was relevant. It was because of them that I have such a love for the movies that I do.

I loved Roger Ebert's reviews, which were sometimes even more interesting than the films themselves! One of my favorites is his surprisingly philosophical review of Open Water (2003), which is based on the real story of two divers who were left behind by their boat:
"When it began to grow dark, when a thunderstorm growled on the far horizon, a great emptiness settled down upon me. The movie is about what a slender thread supports our conviction that our lives have importance and make sense. We need that conviction in order to live at all, and when it is irreversibly taken away from us, what a terrible fate to be left alive to know it."

I met Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel as a small child full of questions and opinions about movies. It was in an "off duty" moment. But they were both very kind and respectful and listened with interest to what I had to say.

To each their own and in this case, Ebert comes through as a thoughtful, humanist...Would have been an honor to sit and talk movies with this man.

My brother and I grew up watching Ebert & Siskel and their Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down banter made us both into moviephiles. Miss this show!

Roger Ebert had a real talent with words. I always enjoy reading his various books on movie reviews. (He's the only person I know of who has won the Pulitzer Prize for writing about movies.)

I think The Third Man is the best film ever made, I just can’t stop rewatching it, totally brilliant film, there’s not one misstep in it, totally addictive, 🙂

The important thing is to enjoy the movies you actually like and not be swayed by the opinions of others

Fantastic list from a thoughtful critic. It’s interesting that Ingrid Bergman, Claude Raines and Orson Wells are repeat characters on such a short list.

Ebert wasn't the only writer who elevated film review to an art form, but he's still my personal favourite. He thought & felt deeply about films, he was a gifted writer, & maybe most important to me he was a moral person who wasn't afraid to consider the ethical or unethical nature of films & filmmakers. His joy & love for film shone thru every review, even when his review was absolutely scathing.

"Notorious doesn't have the slick style of Hitchcock's later films"? Excuse me? Notorious is all style...brilliantly directed in every way. No surprise Bergman is in 2 of Ebert's 10 favourites as he said she was his favourite actress.

I think the world of Roger Ebert. He knew movies and talked very well about them. He had character and expressiveness. When his co-host Gene Siskel passed away he mounted a first-rate appreciation of him. Roger Ebert was a Mensch!

Outstanding list. I’m so happy to see ‘Notorious’ on it. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. I think it’s a bit under-appreciated? But it’s a stunner. Probably some of the best work of Grant’s career and Bergman is just… well… perfection. They’re at the height of their powers. It’s taut, thrilling and beautifully shot.

Roger Ebert's reviews were great. I nearly always agreed with him. A real loss to the movie-going public when he passed.

I miss Roger and Gene. I would watch their PBS program every week. Remember when they had a little dog show up on Gene's lap for the "dog" movies of the week ? Sometimes even the theme song melody of their show runs through my mind. Films can hit you in certain times of your life when they have a big impact on you. You might tend to make that film "dear" to you. Regardless of the lack of fine craftsmanship. Some films drop your jaw. When I was a kid in the 60s, people would always be saying "how did they do that ?", about a dangerous or Sci Fi scene. We really could be in awe. But now with CGI, the surprise is gone. Now we all know just how everything is done. Think that with each new generation, the amount of pandering goes up. Films are made for shareholders !

What I have always admired about Roger Ebert was, regardless of whether he liked the film, he was honest about its qualities. He could admire the work, even if it wasn't to his taste. He understood film making and what makes a well structured story. He was objective before subjective. The best.

Roger Ebert did an entire lecture about Dark City (1998). Many people throughout history believed we actually live under a dome. Many today still believe this.

"Dark City" by Alex Proyas is a great visionary achievement, a film so original and exciting, it stirred my imagination like "Metropolis" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." - Roger Ebert
