In 87 they started BLOOOing them, been a thing every since. You mentioned timing, let me blow your mind. When your drumline is in the back of the field they have to play a half beat AHEAD of the hornline and the front ensemble so the crowd hears the beat at the right time due to how long it takes sound to reach the audience/judges. Months of practice go into this perfecting timing.
