Chinese 'supercomputers'-What happened ?

On November 14, 2023, the Global Supercomputer TOP500 list was announced, with the US Frontier continuing to hold the top spot, while Chinese supercomputers dropped out of the top ten, sparking heated discussions in the global tech community. This change has raised questions and concerns about the development of Chinese supercomputers, while also reflecting the importance and influence of supercomputing in international technological competition. Through today's video, I am delighted to join the audience in focusing on and reflecting on the following issues: 1. Why did Chinese supercomputers drop out of the top ten in this TOP500 ranking? Does this imply a decline in China's strength in the supercomputing field? 2. The article mentions that Chinese supercomputers have already pioneered the release of E-level computers but chose not to make a public announcement. What considerations are behind this decision? 3. How do US sanctions on China's supercomputing sector affect the development of Chinese supercomputers? What strategies does China have in response to these sanctions?

Dear viewers, welcome to the Chinese channel! The field of supercomputing has always been regarded as a national key technology, with its powerful computing capabilities providing strong support for various areas such as scientific research, weather forecasting, and materials research. However, in the recent Global Supercomputer TOP500 rankings, China was surprised to find that, after many years, the US, Europe, and Japan almost dominated the top 10 "TOP500," while Chinese supercomputers, which have long dominated the list, were rarely heard from. What happened to Chinese "supercomputers"?

It is easy to see that the best-ranked Chinese supercomputer on the list is "Sunway TaihuLight," even TaihuLight, this time only ranked sixth, and the Tianhe-2 of the National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou almost dropped out of the top ten. With a ranking decline all the way, it is expected to fall out of the top ten without any surprises when the supercomputer list is released half a year later, according to the plans of Europe, the US, and Japan. Has China's supercomputing really declined? Will Sunway TaihuLight become the swan song of Chinese supercomputers? Is it because of the strong sanctions imposed by the US on Chinese chips, leading to the suppression of supercomputer development, similar to Huawei's abandonment of its smartphone business? Of course not!

Better to stop cooperating with the enemies, keep future advancement to itself.

China didn't stop making supercomputers. China stopped telling the US who to sanction.

There's a big difference.

The Chinese are no longer building supercomputers based on the x86 platform. They've gone to RISC-V.

There's no point in following Western standards. China must have the confidence to set all its own standards. First step: set new standards; next step: replace the Western standards as much as possible. One day the Western cultures and civilization will be vanished, and China don' t have to wait.

China software is not inferior to those of the US as reported but rather they have set their own standard and benchmark.
China softwares are developed to meet China standards and needs.
Having said this, it will be extremely hard for US and any Western counterparts to try to sell their products to China.
Denied them Google OS and Harmony OS emerged.
Soon Western software developers will discovered that their products are either inferior or simply incompatible.
The real results and consequences of decoupling is beginning to surface.
Supercomputer is one of them. China has moved on Quantum Supercomputer. This began in 2011 after Obama banned Intel from whipping Xeon CPU chips to China.
A decade later, US is now lacking behind.
Is it the Chinese fault again?
President Putin has predicted this a decade ago.

they are wise to hide their achievements....don't brag, just dominate without a word...like a true gentlemen does...only she men brag

Sanctions by USA on the supply to China of fast processing chips such as the Nvidia's GPUs had slowed down China's ability to make new, more and faster Super Computers.
China need to solve this GPU chips supply problem or move entirely into the new field of the much faster quantum computing to do the processor's job, producing the necessary new hardwares and softwares.
Either solution will take China a few years to achieve and meanwhile USA, Europe and Japan will continue to dominate the world's supercomputers ranking list.
However, USA, Europe and Japan should note that :
人無千日好,花無百日紅.
(Good days will not last forever and neither will flowers bloom for long).
China will catch up eventually.

To be humble is better than getting sanctioned by bad loosers.

They're all fakes, just ignore them :)
Do you tell everyone how much money you have in your bank account?? LOL.

Although it's possible for China to make supercomputers in secret, that's very unlikely for very long. China has been trying to make its own GPUs instead of buying nVidia and AMD but has had a mixed record and lacking advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology is unable to make its own.

There is a lot Chima can do with the supercomputors already built but those will gradually become less important as the world continues to advance leaving China behind.
