That green between the core shadow and terminator line is an amazing trick to turn the form. I see it a lot in Sargents paintings.

This is why camera photos will always feel "flat"

We create an "illusion" of our subject and connect differently with our subject and the viewer.

Amazing this skill we have.

Nice work!

I have painted all my life, but I never learned as much and as fast as after viewing these videos by Alex!

The smoothness and softness of your painting is just amazing. Your method of color mixing and blending is soo unique

It's impressive how much the eyes can bring it all together.

Thank you for this masterful and easy-to-follow demonstration. Now comes the hard part: I have to paint!

Love your approach on this one! It looks more modern than the other portraits you have done in your channel. Thanks for this valuable lesson, Alex!

Love this! This is like an all-day workshop concentrated into a 16 minute explosion of information! Thank you!
(I noticed the model started nodding off around the 12:10 mark. I guess he posed for longer than 16 minutes!)

Fantastic video Alex. Wonder why these last videos have so little views, they’re top quality. Regarding temperature, I was looking at some modern masters (Munch, Picasso etc), and even in their most ‘simple’ paintings (like those ‘geometric’ picasso portraits), every colour - even when appearing just out of the tube - has always some warmer and cooler version of the same hue, of the same value of course, plus some touches of grey/complementary which blend in unnoticed because they have the same value.

if the goal is not realism, but rather experimental personal expressionism, then what's to teach. excellent video.

Thank you for all you do! I was wondering if you would ever be open to teaching a short lesson on painting hands? This is something that I think a lot of young artists could benefit from.

Good job. Lots of work to pull all those skin tones together.
