Bosnia, Rwanda, Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria - a quarter-century of stumbles in America’s pursuit of a more peaceful and just world. American military interventions have cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars, yet we rarely manage to enact positive and sustainable change. In Peace Works: America's Unifying Role in a Turbulent World, ambassador and global conflict leader Rick Barton uses a mix of stories, history, and analysis for a transformative approach to foreign affairs and offers concrete and attainable solutions for the future. The book begins and ends in Syria – the ultimate failure of our current approach to foreign policy, and with devastating consequences.

Thank you for the livestream of this the cogent and heartfelt discussion with Ambassador Rick Barton and the lessons, inspiration and hope for peace on offer in his new book, "Peace Works". On a technical note, I had to forward the video to (approximately) the 1:05:30 mark before the talk actually begins - you might be losing some of your potential audience!

Interesting, but only slightly related thought: For the cost of the War in Iraq 2003, the USA could have built a new home for every family in Iraq (do the math yourself). Which policy would have been a more effective tool to promote peace and economic stability in the region? Destroy the infrastructure and mechanisms of government? or Build every family a new home?

Having worked at both UNHCR and State (Conflict and Stabilization Operations), being able to reach down through the various levels of governments to hear what people on the street at local levels are saying is clearly something the USG needs to do better.
