Bantry: One of The Most Beautiful Bays in Ireland - International Living

Bantry Bay is one of the most beautiful small harbors in Ireland, and was the site where French ships were supposed to land in Ireland's 1798 uprising against the British, making the area historically important as well.

Today Bantry attracts tourists as well as expats, primarily from Britain and France. The British, particularly, come to this part of ireland to recapture a lifestyle they remember from their childhood: safe, friendly, small-town village life in an area of great natural beauty.

So beautiful a country, like a fairyland. Been there in the fall of 2008.

My grandfather, who was born in 1864 and was a cattle drover travelled on a cattle boat from Bantry to begin a new life in Salford, Manchester in around 1880. Sadly of course, he never went back. God knows how wretched the conditions must have been in Ireland at the time for him to move to the slums of Manchester to have "a better life" than back home. It doesn`t bear thinking about.

I wish I lived there. I'd do anything to start over in that beautiful area.

note to annoying and inaccurate voiceover...what you describe as "one of the most beautiful small harbours in the world" is in fact, the second deepest natural bay in the world.

Stupid voiceover and totally inaccurate on the second largest natural harbour in the world. As for Cork airport its about an hours drive.
