HOKA SPEEDGOAT 5 vs MAFATE SPEED 4. This has been a video a lot of you have been asking for, so here it is folks! A head to head battle between two of Hoka's trail running heavy weights, the Speedgoat 5 and their Mafate Speed 4. Both shoes have been designed to soak up the miles on a big mix of terrain, offering high levels of cushioning and grip. I've given both models a thorough testing and I personally think they feel very different to run in. I also think that one of them is head and shoulders above the other when it comes to all round performance. Check out the video to find out if it's the SG5's or the Mafate Speed 4's?

Really hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

As of today I have 909 miles on my Mafate Speed 4. Nothing is falling apart. The tread is definitely showing some wear. This shoe will probably last 3 times longer than any Speedgoat I owned.

Sweet review! I completely agree about the tounge/lockdown on the SG5. Mafate 4 vs Exodus Ultra should be the next showdown.

Thanks for the review. I have done SG for the last two years and will try the Mafate. God job.

I have both and I definitely prefer the Mafate Speed 4. The SG5 is good with its cushioning for relatively straight-ahead runs on gravel and hard-packed dirt trails, but I don't like it for technical trails where agility and nimbleness are needed. The midsole stack is a little too high for that. The MS4, in comparison, can pretty much do it all and just might be my favorite for technical trails due to the superior traction and lower-to-ground feel. And it also provides good comfort and protection. I have a lot of good trail running shoes but I find that I have pretty much everything covered in between the MS4, Xodus Ultra, and the new Peregrine 13 I got recently. Looking forward to the Xodus Ultra 2!

Good comparison, I’d definitely agree with your preference to the Mafate 4s. The cushioning feels high quality it’s soft and responsive but stable as well. Definitely a better lockdown and more confidence inspiring and comfortable l. Feels great even 25k into a run.

I’ve enjoyed the Speedgoat 5s and done 650km in 2 pairs, I did find the speedgoat midsole flattens out after 350-400km though and the upper stretch issues you mentioned.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. For looking into the camera and "reminding" Hoka that the Speedgoat 3 and I might say the Evo Speedgoat are the G.O.A.T. for the Speedgoat line up. Smh. I early retired both pair of my shoes just to save them for Special occasions.

Agree… love my Mafate’s more than my SG’s…. But the Hoka Evo Speedgoat’s are my all time favs… wish I could find a pair..

Great content! And brilliant timing, I’ve got the Speedgoat 5’s but they just rub my ankle on really long runs.... but today the Mafate 4’s were delivered. I’ve got a few decisions which shoes to take out to California for the Lake Sonoma 50 next month.

A comparision between the Mafate speed 4 and Salomon slab genesis would be interesting!

Currently using the Mafate 4. Took them on a 35km trail race straight out of the box and since then have run around 200km of races. Toe padding is protective, however I find they can be blister machines on the toes if not laced properly.

I was in heaven when I found the Speedgoat 3! I have never had a shoe fit so good. I bought 4 pairs
and I am down to my last speedgoat 3. I have been saying the exact same thing about the 4 and 5. Excited to try the Mafate 4! Thank you.

I love, love, love them. My first trail shoes and I'm very pleased with my choice. I might get another pair when my current pair retires.

Great comparison Loyd, I have both shoes and brought them for 100k race last week, wore the MS4 in the first 50k, it was great but I have blister on both of my toenails (I have wide feet and went half size up), and switched to SG5 (wide) for the second half of the race, felt better thereafter. Not recommended to wear MF4 more than 50k if you have a wide feet, it just rubs my toenails badly.

I have both. SG5 for me but Mafate a very good shoe. I like the outsole on the Mafate better. Great comparison 🇨🇦

I’m with you on the Speedgoat 3s Loyd, I did a 50 miler with no issues on my feet at all. I really like my Speedgoat 5s though, I didn’t like my Mafate Eros from a few years back, good to hear the new Mafate is working well. Maybe need to give the new Mafate a closer look.

Thanks Loyd, totally agree, I found the mafate speed 4 a bit more durable as well, done 450 miles in the SG5 and it was ready to be retired, I’ve got 630 miles on the Mafates and still going…..both great shoes tho for me personally 👍👊

Great review! I am on the market for some new trail shoes. I have had my eyes on the SG for some time. Though have always been concerned with the fit, and stability with the higher stack. Also, I am coming from the M5 as a daily trainer. So I am familiar with the dual density Profly midsole. I am not crazy about the colorways tbh, though have to seriously consider these. I can’t wait to try them out, as well as the SG. To see how they compare. Thnx

I am no expert, but I find the lock down on my new Speedgoat 5s is a bit troublesome compared to my SG4s.
