How the ‘Oh Yeah’ Song in Ferris Bueller Came to Be

“Oh Yeah.” You’ve heard this song—full of oh yeah, bow bow and ch-ch ch-ch ch-ka!—who knows how many times over the years. Recorded by the Swiss synth pop duo known as Yello, “Oh Yeah” became a pop culture phenomenon after being featured in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” In the 1986 movie, the percussive piece is the soundtrack to the scene where Cameron shows off his father’s prized Ferrari to his friend Bueller. And we all know what happened after that. (If you don’t, you must watch this ’80s teen classic.) But what’s the story behind “Oh Yeah?” We meet up with Yello—composer Boris Blank and lyricist/vocalist Dieter Meier—in Zurich to hear it straight from them. They even perform some fresh oh yeahs just for us.

Boris Blank: "I start with a funky bass line."
And the rest is history.
"OH YEAH!"

I was in a drive-in theatre in my hometown watching "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" when "Oh Yeah" came on for the first time, and I was blown away. I was 10. I loved it when the song made an appearance in "The Secret of My Success" a year later. Still one of my favorite songs.

fun fact: "oh yeah" originally was the b-side of yello's 7inch "desire" - which is still my most favourite song of all time - and only became it's own 7inch after it's been used in ferris bueller's day off

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off really had the perfect pacing and use of the song in the ending credits.

NOTE!! As of 2017 the vocalist said he was still making millions of this song from all of the licenses and such. Lots of one hit wonders have been set for life with one hit song.

Yello has an amazing sound. It still sounds fresh today. Maybe not Oh Yeah but other older songs. And their new songs are great too!

Boris Blank is a genius behind the mixing desk, listen to his work with Malia, that productions is genuine top notch. I‘ve met him some day and he‘s down to earth, no billionaire attitude. That‘s why both guys get so much respect

For me, this is one of those songs that is almost impossible not to lip sync, or sing along with, or dance to EVERY time I hear it.

Plot Twist: Stan Lee didn't die, he just pursued his dreams of making music.
