In the first episode of Season 4, I share what it took to rebuild our 36' sailboat from a complete gutted hull and deck into my ideal voyaging boat. Every phase of the rebuild is covered from fiberglass work to woodwork, from painting to rigging, from pumbing to electrical.

Previous episodes recap:
Season 1, Episode 1, contains a short synopsis of a six year total rebuild of the Far Reach from a gutted bare hull. I also double hand the Far Reach offshore with my sister from NC to the BVI.
In Season 2, I single-hand the Far Reach from Sint Maarten back to NC.
In Season 3, I share my Single-handed voyage from NC to the BVI as well as from the VI back to NC.

If you have questions or stories to share about your own voyages feel free to post them in the comment section. Happy sailing.

Wow that’s inspiring! It’s great to see the Pardey’s ideas incorporated into a non-Hess designed boat. It’s just beautiful. Congratulations.

I've been researching small boats to tackle a multi-year project on so we can go sailing in a few years. I was going over things I'd like to do to make it more seaworthy and eliminating the toe rail and strengthening the hull/deck joint was one of the first things I thought of. And here I am finding your videos and you did just that!

My son and I are getting ready to tackle a 1974 Bristol 40- love the idea of getting rid of the toe rail.

Well, , , , I've watched a few of your sailing videos, more or less come across them by chance. But I fear I haven't watched them hard enough, because I didn't notice how pure of a sailor you are and I failed to notice how perfectly appointed your boat really was. I totally agree with your philosophy, I try to find ways to simplify my boat as well, it's a much more modern boat design, but that doesn't mean that I need to complicate it with unnecessary fancy gadgets. Thank you so much for sharing this video with us. Best regards from Jarle

I see a lot of Hal Roth & Whisper in this video. Which is a good thing, for sure.

Worth watching a third time! Just great and it shows what, I believe, is the right way to think and approach life. The view @ 1:19 is simply stunning in a sort of Indiana Jones vibe. Yeah, I know, a different setting and different subject matter, but for some reason it feels similar: classic style done right in an unpretentious way. In these crazy times we live, this picture could and should be on a cover of a magazine. Every single item in that shot is exactly what it purports to be - real wood, real metals (those windows are stunning), paper books and charts, the fabrics are just spot on in texture and color - everything has a certain consistent style, one against the other, and strikes a consistent look and feel. Love it!

LOL, been there done that, it was only a 24 footer but yeah took it home to do a keel swap and fix a bit of Rot, next minute, I had stripped the hull out until only the transom and main bulkhead was left, no decks either. Re-launched 2 years later.

Binge watching these videos and I must say this rebuild is a job well done indeed. If there is only one thing that I would do differently in "my dream" Cape Dory rebuild, it would be the engine. A nice new Beta Marine fully mechanical (no electronics) diesel with as large a tank as possible. Oh, and while I run the fantasy in my head, lots of lithium batteries for all the electronics I would have and a water maker ... wait, I think I just ruined the whole point of this sailboat build. You must be so disciplined to escape all the mumbo jumbo electronic aids and keep it simple. I admire that. Since in my dream I want to travel the world, mostly alone preferably, I would have to get that engine and some base amount of electronics.

Beautifully explained, beautifully thought out, beautifully built, I'm sure you don't need anybody to tell you that you should be very proud of what you've achieved. Fair winds & much respect...
