Tai Pham and the Power of Green Lantern

Every now and then, a creator comes along with a very personal, powerful story to tell. And rather than compromise their story so it can be told with an existing character, or change an existing character to better fit the story, a different path is taken...a new character is created, tailor-made to get the most out of what the writer is here to express. That's what Mihn Le did when he introduced the world to Tai Pham, and proceeded to use the conventions of Green Lantern to tell a story rooted in his own family's history, about carrying the burden and power of your cultural legacy into a world seemingly filled with violence and fear.

And people say that teens cannot be Green Lanterns, this story proves it completly otherwise

I need to read this different take on Green Lantern. I enjoyed coming of age stories. I found it personal and relates to me.

Tai Pham is awesome! His grandma was a badass too, if I read that story as a kid it would be one of my favorites for sure. Grandma is a hero and she trusted me with her power? sign me in. The way I see it there's no need to bring him to main continuity, his stories don't need to be burdened by all unfolding DC events, like the Earth One title. I'd love to watch you talking about the Earth One GL by the way.
Great video as always Dan.

(I just read GL #4, hoping to hear your take on it :)

Tai is lovely and I love seeing him. Definitely needs to stay out of main continuity though because otherwise people will raise a stink about him and his grandmother as lanterns :/

I agree and disagree with you. With Tai Pham, I love how the writer uses the character and the setting of the story but I wish the grandmother’s history as a lantern was more unique (it felt way too much like Hal’s). I’m glad the writer was able to write his story through his character but at the same time, I don’t think writers should just create new lanterns for the heck of it. Disregarding the fact that so many lanterns makes the brand confusing and hard to follow (fans can barely get Hal and John straight), the lanterns are already so diverse and represent so many cultures that making another lantern just takes away time and development from another who deserves it just as much. Outside of Hal and guy, every human lantern is a POC, a member of the LGBT+ community and/or a woman. There’s only 1 monthly GL book right now and that’s not enough to put attention towards 8 diverse lanterns plus all the supporting characters and lanterns. For me, did Jo Mullein have to be created when Simon, a Muslim American man, or Jess Cruz, a Latin American woman, could’ve been in the story? There needs to be a limit for new lanterns so that the ones you already established can develop and be important. Otherwise, how represented can you feel or how much can you care about a new lantern when they’re gonna be replaced within a year and be completely forgotten? Kyle, a Mexican American man, had almost 2 decades as the newest lantern and he’s become one of the most famous and beloved lanterns out there but Simon? Not so much.
