Tasso Azevedo: Hopeful lessons from the battle to save rainforests

"Save the rainforest” is an environmental slogan as old as time — but Tasso Azevedo catches us up on how the fight is actually going these days. Spurred by the jaw-dropping losses of the 1990s, new laws (and transparent data) are helping slow the rate of deforestation in Brazil. Is it enough? Not yet. He has five ideas about what we should do next. And he asks if the lessons learned in Brazil be applied to an even bigger problem: global climate change.

"we have lost 2 billion hectares (of forest) in 2000 years..." half of that in just last 100 years!

It's not enough to stop doing the negative things.  We must reforest, increase the carbon content in our soils, increase the water holding capacity of our land, grow food where we used to grow lawns, and so on.  Work to make it better.

I learned somewhere that the northern forests like the Norwegian (that i live around myself) hold more Co2 per M2 than the tropical forests, because the cold climate stops decomposition better, but i guess i was told a lie.

Good talk!  I hope I can do my bit to save the climate.  I'm very interested in ride share, electronic vehicle and autonomous vehicle technology.  I just hope these can be sped up and implemented faster

I was born in Mato Grosso state in the Amazon region, and we can watching all land that suffered deforestation growing again, between 5 and 10 years all the land are regenerated. The big question is and about the cities around the world, all these people should be feed and buy stupid object in order to provide emotion solution for an empty life.

I'm glad he's optimistic, but from my seat it all looks a bit more gloomy

2:31 Isn't this fairly egregious cherry picking? 2, 000 years ago there were a lot of forests, sure. But 20, 000 years ago glaciers a mile deep covered a large fraction of the green in that map. Granted, that is a looong time ago, but civilization has been kind of an eon-scale event and you can't just cut it off half way through the Roman Empire.

It seems to me that humans have lived in an Earth with much much less green than what we have now. Deforestation is still bad, but we need to learn history correctly too.

What is the name of the plant beetle at 9:45?

+Dgfrmxon I think he brought it up to emphasize the fact that within a time period 20 times shorter we still lost half as much hectares.
