Ben Barnes is showing every bit of humanity that you don't see in the books for a villain. It’s kind of heartbreaking as he has an 'agenda' to save Grisha and a powerlust. 100's of years of pain has made the soft Aleksander disappear and then there are those special moments when Alina brings him back (his balance). Like when he was explaining the Ravka threats and got enveloped in emotional darkness in episode4 and Alina touched him/cancelled out the darkness and they were engulfed in a light bubble. She mirrored what he had said in an earlier episode without even realising it - 'You are not alone!' (For immortals thats a bid deal!). God he looked so relieved like he wanted to cry from so many years of pain -being close to someone finally who can be by his side. 🖤

Another example in the 'make me your villain' argument where Alina firmly stood her ground but made it clear in a very queen-like stance how they could have had a future together. She placed his hand on her chest as a reminder and you could see a glimpse of the old Aleksander reignite with her touch and the sadness and regret appear in the Darklings eyes.🖤 Alina is his equal and he has been in love with her all along. But like most fantasy dramas its PROBLEMATIC.

Shadow and light complete each other. Without the darkness of shadow the light loses its purpose. I love how they complement each other. Darkling and alina are bound to be together. Her positivity will nullify his darkness and the nature will find it's balance.

Darkling was never a bad guy. Yes made wrong decisions but not unreasonably. He was saving and protecting Grisha.
At the end of the books he shows it in the most self-secrificing way possible ♥️i respect him so much more than her best friend
