I was an F-16 comm-nav-ECM specialist in the 311th AMU, 58th Tactical Training Wing at Luke AFB in the early 80's, working on these magnificent aircraft was one of the coolest things I have ever done. Seeing them do FCF (functional check flight) full burner take offs going vertical got everyone's attention on the line every time. Especially at dusk with an faint orange sky, silhouette of the mountains in the background and the diamonds of the afterburners extending out from the engine as long as the plane itself. If that sight doesn't give any hot rodder a wiggle in your loins check your pulse. Easily the baddest looking plane ever built, right next to the SR-71.

Ya gotta see it in person! Waaaayyyy back when, I got to see an F-4Phantom II and an F-104 Starfighter do max performance take offs. There is no describing how a J-79 on afterburner can liquefy your insides from the sheer noise. Or to see the aircraft go into a near vertical climb and be out of sight in mere seconds. What was particularly poignant, was the 104 pilot is my dad. That was over 50 years ago and the memories are still laser sharp.

Being a fighter pilot of any kind of jet has gotta be the coolest job ever

I was in the 388th TFW at Hill AFB in the 80s. My son and his friends would ride their bikes to a spot overlooking the runway and watch the F-16s come and go all day.

Wow, still amazing to see that the seventies era fighter jet (the RNLAF purchased the first batch in 1979) can accelerate vertically. And th Viper still is the most elegant, shark-like looking fighter out there. Great video. Thanks.

Oh boy, slick config for FCF, I love that. Damn thing is an "A" model from 1980 that I worked on when the Dutch trained at Hill AFB. Glad to see it still going. Most are on sticks or at the boneyard.

I worked in an auto body shop right next to the runway at Lambert, St Louis in the 90's. We watched a lot of cool take offs and landings then. F-18's, I believe F-15's, they had two vertical stabs and could for straight up with afterburners. Some were In the yellow primer, test flight before painted I suppose. Saw some Hercules once in awhile, and once a C-17 Globe master. Even saw President George Bush senior's air Force one when he visited McDonald Douglas or Boeing Lockheed Martin. Miss those days of watching jets take off. When they say on runway and tested the engine pre take off was our cue to run outside and watch.

Great camerawork! F-16 is a really beautiful design. SU-27 is pretty too.

Back in the day when I was a controller at Campbell Tower... I got to see an F-14 do an unrestricted climb, full afterburners, at night... it just lit up the sky!!! So freakin’ cool!!!

That is a CV-II (CV2) take off where they climb and continuously level up to climb again and again level off, an unrestricted "Gate Climb" is where they climb straight up as if through a gate in the air. I am a former airforce air traffic controller and have enjoyed each of them every day.

That bell going off in the background is because the test maxed out the awesome meter!

Worked the flight line from '79-'82 at Eglin AFB in the Florida panhandle. 15s, 16s and earlier F4s all day long.

Absolutely awesome. Such a beautiful agile plane, despite its age it's still incredible.

Early block 15 aircraft doing what appears to be an OCF or FCF. It's flying clean so I'd assume it just came out of a major hourly maintenance. It definitely brings back some memories!

Wow, its not that often that we see a 'clean' Viper. Nice catch! Interesting badge, Weapons Instructor. Curious what it was he was testing. And the cherry on the cake is the unrestricted climb, awesome!
