I was at Peter Prier and Sons in Salt Lake City, UT, the other day trying out violins, and they let me play this violin labeled "Pietro Guarneri de Mantua". Authentic Pietro Guarneri violins are worth over a million dollars. Tell me what you think...is it worth it?

ROB LANDES is an award-winning violinist who started playing the violin at 3 years in Orem, Utah. Born to a large musical family, Rob gave his first solo recital at 10 years old, performed in the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on the Disney Channel with the Disney Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, and founded a piano trio that performed actively throughout his teenage years. Rob has won first prize at numerous music competitions and has soloed with the Utah Symphony, Utah Valley Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, BYU Philharmonic, and BYU Chamber Orchestra. As a first violinist of the BYU Chamber Orchestra, Rob performed in more than twenty cities throughout central and southern Europe, and as concertmaster of the orchestra, gave a concert to a sold-out audience in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Rob was awarded full scholarships to attend Brigham Young University and Rice University where he earned a Bachelor’s in Music and Master’s in Music, respectively. While studying at Rice, Rob began covering rock and pop music, and upon returning to Salt Lake City after graduation, began playing with a looper pedal which he uses to create intricate and stunning arrangements of today and yesterday’s most popular music Rob recently won the award for "Best Instrumental" at the Utah Music Awards for his rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah".

Watching that guy pick up the violin and pull magic out of the air almost makes me want to put in the enormous amount of time and dedication necessary to attain that level of skill.

I am so in awe with your playing style. I wish I could skip the countless hours you spent mastering the violin and just be really good

Dude you are so crazy talented... I'm wondering how you violin guys close your eyes when you're playing. It's so cool and so intimate. It's so touchingly. Thank you Rob and greetings from Belarus)

Dude, those artificial harmonics (not sure what you call it on violin, that's what they're called on guitar) were amazing. I have always wished people would do more stuff like that. I have played the viola for a few years, but I play several other instruments. In my musical experience I have noticed the the culture of stringed instruments (of the violin family) is very restricting. You are discouraged from standing out or being inventive. This mentality is ideal for an orchestral setting, but it doesn't have to become a stigma stuck to every stringed instrument or piece of classical music. I love your feel and your imagination, and your "voice" on the violin (too many people sound the same). Your videos are awesome, keep it up!

I picked up the violin in 5th grade (26ish years ago) and played through 8th grade. I kept it for a long time but never played it.

I was broke a while ago and sold it (it was a 3/4 anyways). Now, watching this, suddenly my fire is lit.

I just ordered an electric violin to practice with (there are 7 people in my house - need to keep it down, haha). I think I will watch this video every other day to motivate myself to practice regularly. Maybe someday I will play well enough to do a quality violin some justice.

Oh, and thanks for almost making me cry with joy. The sound... just wow.
