This is a bossa nova which came from Brazil in 1962 and has some of the most beautiful melodies and rhythms. Bossa Novas make up a large segment of the Great American songbook, do a deep dive on Antonio Carlos Jobim, he's the man.

This song made "bossa nova" style jazz popular in the USA in 1964. Gaetz was a top saxophone player in his day.

This song was the perfect exemplar of why Stan Getz on sax was known as "The Sound"🎷

Brilliant! Sadly, Astrud passed away in 2023. She was 83.

That's the all time Saxophone Maestro Stan Getz, incidentally .

You made my day by reacting to this. This is the music I grew up with and it’s wonderful to watch young people enjoy true music.

Ah, the Bossa Nova. My very first hint of what jazz could be.

Woah!, this brings back a memory! When this song was released in the UK in July of 1964 I spent the entire school summer holiday (6 weeks) at an Aunt's in the coastal resort of Great Yarmouth. Anchored just off shore was the Pirate Radio station "Radio Caroline" who broadcast pop music all day and night - completely unknown in the UK at that time. Being so close to the transmitter, reception was amazing, it was even being picked up on electric irons and hairdryers (I'm not joking) and every one of the hundreds of transistor radios on the beach was tuned in. This track was played over and over and I remember walking a couple of hundred yards down the beach and hearing it from start to finish loud and clear! Coupled with the fact that I was 16 years old and the sun shone almost every day this is a great reminder of possibly my best summer holiday ever!
BTW, this is not the version that appeared on the single which itself is edited down. It's credited to Stan Getz whom we see on Sax and Brazilian Joao Gilberto (Astrud's husband) on guitar whom we don't. On the label Astrud gets a credit in small print but it's her name that's remembered-Karma? Hubby Joao is known as the "Godfather of Bossa Nova" the new beat he pioneered in late 1950s Brazil and the song was co-written by another Brazilian legend Antonio Carlos Jobim. An extra treat was a sight of a young Gary Burton on Vibes - Nice One JMBOY!

Need to also check out "Sergio Mendes And Brasil 66", "Herb Albert And The Tijuana Brass" and "The Dave Brubeck Quartet", especially the song Take Five.

One of many songs by the great Antonio Carlos Jobim. Welcome to the sound of Bossa Nova.

Brazilian Bossa Nova is the genre. Has that very pleasing Jazz sound. I believe this was Astrud’s first song she recorded or her first hit. But she went on to have a long career singing this style and there are many videos of her on YT if interested.

Eliane Elias is a Top Notch Brazilian Pianist, who has also blended her Samba/Bossa Nova Roots with Contemporary Jazz .

Phenomenon Talent !

When I was a kid "The Girl From Ipanema" was synonymous with elevator music. TVTropes even has an entry for the phenomena, The Elevator from Ipanema. From the entry: "It was once a common practice for elevators to have soft instrumental music piped in as a means of calming the nerves of jittery or claustrophobic passengers. Similar background music was also widely played in office waiting rooms, restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, and shopping malls, and even on radio via the 'beautiful music' format. The music itself was generally a mix of light orchestral, bossa nova, Fifties-esque lounge, and smooth jazz; the main commonality to these genres being that they were all made to blend into the background, as a kind of aural wallpaper, rather than be actively listened to. This fell out of favor in the 1990s." I picked up a copy of the Getz/Gilberto album when I was in college. The original is far better than the muzak versions piped into elevators back when. João Gilberto plays the guitar, Getz plays the saxophone, Antônio Carlos Jobim plays the piano. Astrud Gilberto sings the English parts. Her version of "Fly Me To The Moon" is excellent too.

"Corcovado" is another gorgeous song with Astrud Gilberto.

Saw Stan play once at a hotel in Cambridge, but I wish Astrid had been there, RIP.
I was attracted by this song, like she was siren, since first hearing it in '64...at the outset of that particular cultural renaissance, largely dominated by the Brits. It made me think of Ipana toothpaste, which was a thing back then. And pretty girls. Speaking of which...you can Google Street View down Ipanema Beach in Rio.
