Jaag Musafir
Fareed Ayaz Qawwal
Produced by Rohail Hyatt

Drawn from the enigmatic poetry of mystic Kabir Das, this track is a Qawwali performed by Fareed Ayaz Qawwal, who are known globally for their traditional and contemporary interventions in the ever-evolving genre, rooted in the mystery of the divine. This track, its trance-like soundscape and timeless poetry, addresses the wistful period between midnight and sunrise, best captured in the word ‘Madrugada’ of Latin origin.

This track dwells on the birth and the inevitable end of time and age, from the perspective of the lover who longingly watches their beloved sleep, as the night sky slowly and suspensefully turns to dawn. Dawn being when the beloved must awake and resume their journey of enlightenment, and the inescapable separation from the lover.

First released in 2006, presented again, now in 2021 as a remastered single, with a richer conviction and belief in the Sufistic balance of the feminine and masculine attributes of all beings.

Hello friends. As always, thank you very much for your love and support. Lots of good wishes back your way and please know that I really appreciate your love for music. Here is some background information to this track..

This is one of my earlier experiments with Qawwali music. I recorded the traditional Qawwali version of this track during a recording session with Fareed Ayaz Qawwal in 2004 and immediately fell in love with it. I was in Mumbai in 2005 to release Rahat Fateh Ali's Charkha album with Saregama Music where I met Mahesh Bhatt and I played him the traditional version of this Qawwali. He suggested that I make a fusion version of this as he loved it as well. I took to the suggestion and requested Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad to come to my studio to record this. Since they are free-form singers, it was quite a process to get them to sing to a fixed tempo but I guess it worked out in the end. Who knew we were sowing the seeds for more sessions together on Coke Studio..

Does anyone want to hear the traditional version of this Qawwali? :)

*_Re jaag, jaag re_*
O, Arise

*_Ae more sajan_*
O my beloved

*_Sajan sakaare jaayenge_*
Beloved will leave in the morning
*_Aur nain marenge roye_*
And my eyes will die from crying
*_Bidhna aisi rain karo_*
O God, make this night such that
*_Jaaki bhor kabhaoon na hoye_*
Its morning never comes

*_Uth jaag musafir bhor bhayee_*
Arise O traveler, it's morning already
*_Ab rain kahan jo sowat hai_*
It's not night anymore, why are you still asleep

*_Ladakpan khel mein khoya_*
Childhood was lost in play
*_Jawani neend bhar soya_*
Youth was spent sleeping
*_Budhapa dekh ke roya_*
Coming of old age makes you cry

*_Uth jaag musafir bhor bhayee_*
Arise O traveler, it's morning already
*_Ab rain kahan jo sowat hai_*
It's not night anymore, why are you still asleep

*_Jo sowat hai so khowat hai_*
Those who sleep, lose
*_Jo Jaagat hai so paawat hai_*
Those who are awake, gain

*_Uth jaag musafir bhor bhayee_*
Arise O traveler, it's morning already
*_Ab rain kahan jo sowat hai_*
It's not night anymore, why are you still asleep

LIFE:

"Ladakpan khel me khoya,
Jawaani Neend bhar soya,
Budhapa dekh ke roya..."

"Lost childhood whilst playing,
during youth, slept freely,
and then in the old age, cried looking at our situation!"

The cadence is a camel's slow pace...
