When I taught middle school (7th and 8th grade English), for every student that failed, I was written up. I was constantly told over and over again how horrible a teacher I was, and how I would never make it in that profession. The teachers that I tought with would give their failing students a C, and call it a day, saying that if they failed the student, that student would not get to go to the next grade, and they didn’t want to be that mean teacher, or have that student in their class again. By the end of the school year, I was told that most of the students who were failing my class would not be held back, and the administration would change all of their F's to C's regardless of what I gave them. I changed school districts, moved up to high school, and didn't look back. Last year, I was awarded teacher of the year, and am beyond excited to go back to teach again next year.

Let them fail...but allow them the opportunity for a "do-again".

Pretty much anyone who grew up in the 70s, 80s or 90’s is yelling “Yes!”.

My girlfriend is a teacher and the main thing she tells me when she comes home is that when this new generation of kids fail they just give up and have no motivation and have no concept of future repercussions. You can get mad at them, work with them one on one, etc. but the one thing that consistently seems to be missing is that at home presence of reassurance that one day they can get better or have success

Coddling vs holding to responsibilities. I’m so thankful my mom NEVER coddled me. It prepared me for life. ❤

I have said this for decades. You have to allow them to make choices that you know aren't good while they are young and you can coach them through it. If you prevent them from failing or consequences they will never learn how to work their way out of it when they get out on their own.

If you don't let your kids fail, then when they do fail as adults (because they will) they have no idea how to handle it. We're already seeing that out and about in society.

Completely agree; especially with the fact that failure is not success, and every parent who teaches his/her kids that their successful when they're not, and screaming at anyone who contradicts that is doing their kids serious harm.

I love how everyone is talking to Dr Phil all of a sudden. We truly live in a matrix

This is true. I wanted to run for class president when I was in 8th grade but my dad wouldn’t let me. He thought I wasn’t popular enough so he didn’t sign my permission slip. Honestly sometimes you have to let your kids do their own thing even if you don’t think they can do it.

Well, you don’t just solve the problem for them, you TEACH them HOW to solve the problem. You don’t just let them sit there and struggle.

"It wasn't trauma, we had a good time."

I remember when my ex and I first got together. We were both DIRT POOR college students, and we lived off of Hardee's "Five Dollar Big Box" (I don't know if that's still a thing).

Each time one of us got a raise or a promotion or a new job, it was like Christmas, the Fourth of July, and both of our birthdays every time. We weren't "poor" in our minds. We were just people who were blessed to make a little more money each time it happened.

failure builds character participation trophy's and doing your kids homework for them builds weakness.

This is where kids learn that life isn't fair and parents won't be there for them one day. They are gonna have to do it alone one day. Its one of the most important lessons someone can learn, it leads to not voting democratic as well because they wont be expecting hand outs.
