Brass, Choir and Strings - How to layer for epic orchestral music

Writing epic orchestral music is really fun to do! And it can be rather full-filling when you have written a great epic part. A climax with mighty brass, an epic choir and strings. In this video I show you how I layered these orchestral sections in the music track Unleashed. Giving you a simple trick, a guideline, how you can write these epic parts yourself!

the result sounds super epic with the layers together, something very useful to do something powerful. It could sound even richer with the cellos at the same octave as the horns, and the bass strings at the same octave as the tuba

Notes for myself

Mighty brass, epic choir and soft silky strings.

1:08 Play a section then add sections one by one. Horns - Choir - Strings - Tuba - Trombones. In the MIDI, there's a lot of space between the different sections. So when writing something like this, think in space and octaves.

4:33 Wrap up. Best advice: Think in octaves and leave enough space between different sections to get the full epic sound.

This was so good! Might I ask how come you only use octaves and not a 3rd a 7th etc to make chords? This is where it becomes interesting in separating and deciding who plays what I think!! :)

I'm not a big fan of the octaves for a lot of instruments, I prefer harmonisation. But indeed in Epic music a lot of instruments are layering in octaves... that give more power and create a simpler melodic line, easier to capture the attention of auditors :)
