10 for 10: Hamilton navigate the mine field of re-issued design and hit gold with this authentically executed field watch...

We’re back with the second episode of our new series, 10 for 10. This is a series from WatchGecko that sets out to inform you, the reader of 10 watches branching over 10 different categories that combined offer an extremely versatile, enjoyable and rounded collection. All together coming in at a value less than £10,000. Some watches maybe more expensive, some may be extremely affordable but together they will all come in less than £10,000.

The field watch
So we already have our everyday watch in the collection, so now its time for something a little different. Field watches. Now, as a concept, they somewhat live in the shadows of divers when it comes to tool watches. However, field watches steam from the same desires a diver has. The necessity for something tough, durable, easy to read and reliable.

The main difference seems to be the field watches disregard for bulk. Diver watches historically benefit from being larger in size. Whether that be favouring a 36mm case size rather than 32 – 34mm back in the 50s, or 44mm over 40mm in 2010. Field watches, on the other hand, suit being more slim, subtle and under the radar. They may not have received the limelight as divers have, but they certainly still have a place in your collection.

Inspired by the military, built to last”

The Khaki Mechanical is Hamilton’s way of paying the highest form of respect to original military field watches that left a mark on purposeful watchmaking indefinitely. It tastefully allows more modern wrists to appreciate the origins of many popular designs in a reliable, obtainable way.

After opening the box for the first time you can easily see Hamilton has nailed not only the dimensions but also the design. The name of the game with the NOMOS was legibility, so for Hamilton, it has to be authenticity. Everything about this watch from the hands, case and dial all feel like a genuine vintage watch.

A screw down crown would be a terrible idea on a manual wind watch, imagine having to unscrew and re-screw the crown daily just to wind it. No thanks, this isn’t a diver and no one is diving with it. No screw down crown is needed here.

My wife got me one for Xmas, I absolutely love it, hand wind only I really enjoy. Couldn’t recommend it enough

I own the Khaki Field 38mm auto and the Khaki King (40mm), I would have loved to have seen this in a 35/36mm size to complement those. Cracking watches from Hamilton IMO

I own this watch and adore it. It’s getting the most wear out of my collection at the moment. I really like the stock strap, id like to see a bracelet option, preferably with fitted end links, but straight links could be OK as they’d give it a Tudor Ranger feel.

It's a field watch and it's hand winding, a screw down crown is not really necessary. I wear this a lot, it keeps excellent time and is so slim that many would think it's a quarzt unless they see the snooth second hand moving. It looks just awesome. Great job from Hamilton.

Had the grandfather of this watch in the Marines in the late 60s/early 70s. Sold it... dumb move. Now nearly 50 years later bought this watch... and is the same in every way, just beautifully evolved. 38mm instead of the 34mm case on the original Hamilton... but same movement (but better) and same classically functional design. ETA 2801 movement, keeps very accurate time, hacking Highly recommended.

Good review and a great idea doing the ten for ten.
I get my straps from you as well and was thinking of getting this watch, so seeing a few different straps on it is useful .Thanks.

Recently picked up the Hamilton Khaki Field mechanical watch with date function.. I picked the olive green dial as at times the dial looks black, other times grey, and other times olive green. One of best “value” watch out there. Hard to find a better watch at this price point!

Good review. For me a handwound watch should not have a screw down crown, particularly as it has acceptable water resistance without.

I've had the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical for about 6 months now, and it's one of the best watches I've owned. Mine keeps excellent time, gaining about 15 seconds in 6 weeks! I love it!

Love the narration; thoughtful, knowledgeable and articulate. The bronze version of this is tantalizing. The brushed steel is so versatile. Would love to see a review of Serica

I have the date version and even though I would prefer no date I absolutely love this watch. What a joy to be able to interact with my watch everyday when I wind it. The truth is I bought it because it was a manual wind and everything else that is great about this watch is just icing on the cake. Thanks for the great vid.

Love my white dial Hamilton. Just be aware that the lug to lug length is long for those with a wrist size of under 7 inches.

Brilliant review! I just bought this watch and I am so pleased with it. It's a great size and looks very smart in person. The NATO is very well made and fits perfectly! This was the best review by. I've really enjoyed this series and I am looking forward to your future content!

Does it ever wind backwards by itself for you? I wind it up even less than recommended, and it’ll start ticking. When I try to wind more it rolls back against me. I’m only getting like 24 hrs out of it. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks a bunch 👍

I just got this watch. I’m wondering how many winds to get a full charge or how do I know when to stop winding? Thanks.
