Storm Tracker Forecast: Rain, Wind, Snow Bring Travel Impacts & Flooding Risks

A significant weather system will impact our area beginning late tonight, lasting through the day on Monday. This includes a large amount of snow for the mountains, with rain and wind for the valley and foothills. A steady rain will begin to move into our area around 1am Sunday. The steady and widespread rain will remain with us through mid to late morning, prompting a flood watch and flash flood watches to go into effect for the valley and mountains. As the day progresses, the rain begins to lighten in the afternoon for the valley, but remains steady and heavy for the foothills and mountains well into the evening. We can expect 2-5 inches of rain in the valley with 4-12+ inches in the foothills and mountains. The biggest concern will be around our recent burn scars due to the large amount of rain falling, increasing the chance for debris flows, rockslides, and mudslides. If you live near a burn scar, pay close attention to local authorities just in case evacuation orders are given. Now is the time to turn on any weather notifications on your phone or sign up for local emergency notification systems if they are available. Even without the burn scars, this is a significant amount of rainfall. Watch for water over roadways, clogged drains, and stay away from any creek beds as they will most likely fill rather quickly. Another aspect of the storm will be the breezy conditions for the valley. Winds sustained between 20-30mph with gusts up to 45mph are possible. A wind advisory will go into effect Sunday morning through Sunday evening.

The rain and wind will begin to taper off for the valley late sunday, however, at this time the snow levels will begin to drop. A winter storm warning will go into effect for elevations above 6000ft in the Sierra Mountains 11pm sunday and last through 11pm monday for the potential of 6-14 inches of snow with locally 3ft possible above elevations of 7000'.
