Deep in the Congo, there is said to be a creature so devastating that it upturns the boats of locals and savagely feasts on them. Some say it is an evil spirit, while some say it is something far more incredible... the last living dinosaur.

I like this one. I remember watching a doco on this ages ago where the explorer showed the natives a bunch of drawings of the wildlife in the area but he had a drawing of a sauropod mixed in and when they saw it they got excited and said that's Mokele Mbembe.

I am from Congo and as you may guess I am interested in this and this video has been a great source of help as oppose to those VICE videos making a mockery of the matter

I like how you present different perspectives and don't have a religious or political agenda. I'm a Christian...I believe what I believe, but I prefer research findings and news reports that aren't slanted.

That's incredible, an old tv show from the 80s, and I swear I remember some footage of a creature raising it's neck up out of the water. Vague memory but swear it was real.

Ever read Job chapter 40 in the bible. There's a creature called Behemoth which is described in great detail. What I'm guessing is Mbembe is possibly another living Behemoth.

The size of Africa is seriously overlooked. It's enormous and there's plenty of things undiscovered in these remote areas

The comb of the Cassowaries looks similar to the comb of the Rooster. It is interesting that the comb of the Cassowariesalso shares a similarity to Edmontosaurus and other prehistoric dinosaurs. In cryptozoology, the Mokele-mbembe (also written as "Mokèlé-mbèmbé"), Lingala for "one who stops the flow of rivers", is a water-dwelling entity that supposedly lives in the Congo River Basin. Mokele-mbembe was also observed to have a comb much like the Cassowaries.

By the way, I am a Theistic Evolutionist. I fully accept life has evolved over the 540 million years since the Cambrian explosion of primitive organisms to our modern day. I am not saying this in "defense of creationism". I think the similarity of the comb of the Cassowaries and the Mokele-mbembe is a sign of 'convergent evolution' that indicates the Mokele-mbembe was REAL. And I find it strange that the only people looking for mokele-mbembe are creationist ministers, not wildlife biologists. Maybe Jane Goodall could lead an investigation. ❤

During my Master's course I was told during my Semiotics course about how a group of Central African people and a group of Europeans were each asked to draw a simplistic representation of a zebra. The Europeans drew a white triangle with black stripes while the natives drew a striped Hyena. Perhaps the people who saw Mokole Mbembe could not draw any accurate description because so many animals in the region shared similar traits. Maybe the dragon aspects were drawn from crocodiles, but also elephants.

I know the odds of this, among with many cryptids, are slim to none. I wish these creatures are real. It would just be amazing to have such extraordinary animals alive today

the roman historian Livy tells of how the roman military in africa fought a giant water serpent/dragon who had been killing soldiers near the water. Their spears and arrows couldn't pierce its scale like body but eventually after hurling large stones from catapults they killed it. They skinned it and sent the hide back to rome.

I like researching cryptids and other urban legends but I have never heard of this. This sounds interesting tho and I will probably look in to this more.

My opinion is this creature is an undiscovered giant water monitor lizard that resembles a sauropod. This area is vast and not fully explored.

Sauropods have been reported in South America as well. Both Africa and South America use to be connected near region these sightings take place.

Woah. Talk about a coincidence. I just started reading a book that mentions the Mokele Mbembe. It's called Cryptid Hunters.
On another note: you pronounced the name wrong. It's pronounced "Mo-kee-lee Em-bem-bè"

I saw something about this on one of the educational TV channels a few years ago. I wondered if it could possibly be true. It would be so exciting!
It seems that it couldn't be just one creature, it would have to be a small (inbred?) breeding colony to have survived for millions of years.
3:41 - It sounds like it's really territorial - reminds me a bit of hippos.

Mokele-mbembe is also one of the Titans mentioned in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. He was previously contained in Jebel Barkal, Sudan before hearing the call of King Ghidorah and going on a rampage (the only Titans that refused to listen to Ghidorah were Godzilla, Mothra, and King Kong).

In the northern part of Zambia (Close to Congo), the locals believed there was a similar beast living in the Lake Bangweulu. They called it, “Chipekwe” which means monster.
