People who feel like they need a change of job in their careers, but are not ready yet to leave the company, may consider an internal job transfer, known also as internal mobility.

Here are the five steps I highly recommend to anyone who is considering internal mobility. The steps has helped me to make a lateral move in my career and these tips also come conversations I had with people who have moved several times in their careers.

Do you have more tips about this process? Share with me below! 👇

Thanks for your video. Just took a lateral transfer BUT it’s more hours. I’m nervous but did some asking around and two people said they might try to get into this division at some point. So I felt this may be a blessing. I think it’s important to think positively and have faith that no matter what you will get through to the other side.

Hey, thanks for making this video. I am a web developer for a branding agency, but I have found that after a year working here I am always stressed and anxious over learning completely new technologies for different projects, my health has gone really downhill, and I am not as skilled as my peers when it comes to programming. I want to transition to a project manager/scrum master role so that I can help devs with agile methodologies and get them what they need. I hope that I have built enough trust with my manager that he will allow me the opportunity to grow into a different role, because I really like it here!

Thank you, it was really helpful. Specially, first suggestion, talking to line manager is the hardest.
Now I know why it felt hardest, management rejected.

I was interviewed recently for an internal position which is based in UK.
Was able to perform well in interview and got excellent feedback from the interviewing panel.
But i got a rejection email after a couple of week.
The reason mentioned was they decided to proceed with a candidate who have UK work permit.
How to overcome this relocation barrier as the selection should be based on merit and experience rather than work permits or visa.
I am based in Abu Dhabi and works in an UK based oil & gas engineering company.

Thank you for this! I have applied for two roles in a new department within the same company. Looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. Aspiring to truly enjoy my career work.

Long comment:

I got hired as mainly a server and partly as a host, because the manager who was doing my interview asked if I would be ok with doing some hosting as well. I only said yes because 1) I was looking for work for so long, I didn't want to refuse this job opportunity. 2) I was afraid if I said no, he would be like "We'll find someone who will". As of lately, more like a few months, I have been working mainly as a host and I don't like doing it. I have told my new manager that I would like more server shifts because that's what I was hired to be. I have been told I would, but I've been getting less and less shifts as a server, to the point where I have zero serving shifts this week. I don't want to have to look for a new place because I have grown to like my coworkers, but not working the position I actually like doing has me thinking I should find a place that will actually let me work the position I want( And actually train me properly, that's a different story).

I just asked my manager to allow me to interview for a different department after two months. Because right away my current department doesn’t meet my career goals.

Thank you so much for this video!! Very good advice! I have a meeting tomorrow with my managers and the manager who I am interested into moving into their department (accounting to sales) and I will have to let them know I have “ outgrew”my current role and am interested in sales ……. Does that sound good?? Or should I say it a different way??

question: should you always talk to your line manager first or talk to the new role manager first? will your manager deem you as not loyal if eventually the internal transfer does not happen.

Question I Applied for a another position at my job which I got and my manger is trying to block me due to them not having a replacement. They've known of my plan to transfer but only tried now to stop me.

I just made the move a new position that I hate, and my new boss is simply terrible. I've been in the new position for nearly 6 months and find it a torture every day. Do you recommend staying a bit longer or switching again ASAP.

Is there any way to bypass the mandatory 1 year policy? Due to problems with scheduling & culture (toxic work environment)?

I really want to switch internally to a subsidiary company & want to move to a different country. Do they prefer foreign candidates seriously in this case or prefer locals?
