What do the lights on your motherboard mean? They are basically a troubleshooting tool for when your gaming PC is booting up, if it gets stuck on one section you then know where to start diagnosing your problem.

Oh thank God! I was working on my PC and just noticed these lights after I was done. Thought I screwed something up, Guess I just never noticed it before lol

If the lights get stuck it does help narrow it down, BUT, It doesn’t mean that the light it’s on is specifically the problem. It could be that the next part up is the faulty one, and dead enough that it won’t work but alive enough to make the computer think it does. Plus the light at the end can also hang if your storage drive is dead as well because that is the final check before properly booting.

I work RMA for a System Integrator company so I’ve dealt with this a lot.

There are motherboards with segment display which provides error code telling you more about what is wrong if error occurs. Sadly they are not so popular.

When booting my pc the cpu light shows red but only for a second then the light switched to vga, dram, and finally green on boot. My pc boots up normally and everything seems to be fine so should I be worried about the red cpu light? (The lights are good for dram and vga and boot its just cpu red light im worried about)

It's called a post code and they do a little test on each of the components called POSTing (power on self test)

I just did my first build and the motherboard I originally got was dead on arrival which allowed me to spend $10 more to get the board I actually wanted because the first one did not have these lights and the one I wanted did they really are a very cool feature

People hate those blaring speakers, but since I'm halfway ancient at this point. I always have it plugged in since I'm more used to that.

I'm way more at ease with the beeps. No need to open the whole mofo to find the lights. And actually more codes available

I still use it. It's more convenient than small lights

You saved me, I just built my pc with a MSI B550 gaming motherboard, and I wondering what that wire was, it was a speaker.

Motherboard vendors should just include the error code readout on all board instead of advertising it as a feature to justify paying for $1000 boards that blow up your CPU.

My motherboard lights stopped showing long time ago 💀 should I be worried because my pc would still work (a few weeks after my pc won't turn on, idk if its the motherboard or psu because there was a mini power outage but every other device that was plugged into the power strip works)
