I've just finished reading this book and I enjoyed it very much. In some ways it reminded me of some of the novels by Herman Melville, like Typee.

The Cossacks and Hadji Murat are works I’d certainly like to read, I first heard of HM from Harold Bloom’s “The Western Canon” and was surprised to see that he’d picked it as THE book by Tolstoy as opposed to War and Peace or Anna K. My sister recently gifted me a penguin clothbound copy of War and Peace, since Tolstoy has said he was inspired by Thackeray’s Vanity Fair I will likely read the two of them back to back in March of the Mammoths.
I’d love to see more of these book club recommendation videos!

“The Death of Ivan Ilyich” is one of my favorite short works by Tolstoy. I’ll have to check out “The Cossacks”.

Caucuses Lit! I’ve been very interested in some of the Pushkin and Tolstoy pieces set there. It reminds me a lot of Mississippi River literature where it has its unique feeling and set of symbols for readers.

What part (not page number since I have the book in a collection of Tolstoy’s shorter works) of the Cossacks did you read from at the end of your video?

Diary of a Superfluous Man by Turgenev is a great piece...it is about a man the world treats like a" worthless and unexpected guest".. a man who struggles to be at home in the world...
(See Hamlet of the Shchigrovsk Province in the Sketches for a similar character type)...Sketches (whose stories are aimed against serfdom) made such an impression on the czar that he emancipated the serfs on 18 Feb 1861...The protagonist of the Kaa- Sacs( haha) is similar to Chulkaturin, a square peg shoved in a round hole...see also a Month in the Country by Turgenev.
Ask yourself this question: if it's not about you who is it about?
Nobody on this planet can bring you happiness but yourself...living for others is one of the big lies we are taught...helpers help themselves more than anyone else...
All the best ☮️

Have you read Butcher's Crossing by John Williams? Fits the description from your introduction.

He has a short story (one of the longer ones) of a similar theme, in which a gentleman becomes infatuated with a peasant girl.

I think it’s more of a novel for men to enjoy than women. While Anna Karenina would be enjoyed more by females.
