FIFA 22 Review

FIFA 22 excels on the pitch with a patient and more methodical style, but additions elsewhere are only incremental and microtransactions still leave a bad taste. FIFA 22 is out on October 1st for PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, XBS X/S, and Switch.

Richard played FIFA 22 for 25 hours, splitting his time amongst each of its game modes. Review code was provided by the publisher.

It's actually really sad, I remember playing FIFA 12 when I was a kid and could only imagine how good FIFA and videogames would be by now. And these days I barely play videogames especially FIFA due to the lack of innovation besides graphics lol and how heavily commodified they are. Makes me really sad I used to be excited to play the new FIFA but now, I don't even bother with it anymore.

FIFA always baits reviewers with a review code that is unpatched and as the developer intends. Then the E-Sports / Youtubers get their hands on it, cry because it's different (usually slower) and then EA give in and patch the game to shite.

I hate the gambling aspects of fifa, I don't even play sports games but I do get why they get high scores.

It's a football game, it's not like they can overhaul the gameplay completely and compared to their competition which is dumpster fire E football and whatever, this looks amazing in the same genre.

you know the game is bad when its easier to score from 35m than it is from 8 m. Goalkeepers are completely broken. It feels like you have 90% chance of not scoring if u just shoot normally, no matter the range. If you shoot with a finesse shot, you can only score with it from outside the box at a 45o angle. Low driven shots are pretty much the most reliable way of scoring inside the box but its like a 60-80% chance of missing or keeper saving it so that doesnt count for anything. You can time the shots for increasing the chances of scoring but if the keeper is over 83 rated its very difficult still (Which pretty much most of the players in higher divisions have).
Its completely absurd that you cant score inside the box so might as well shoot from 30 m, and im completely honest by saying most of my goals are from 25-30 meters. Usually when i get 20 shots on target i have maybe 1-3 goals for all those chances. Even when i volly green time it with my dybala, who has a chemstyle to get 90+ shot power and 90+ finishing and 90+ volleys, 5m from the keeper and shoots out of his reach, HE STILL FUCKING SAVES IT like hes Ultra instinct goku on roids.

Passing is super inconsistent. Players often pass to the completely wrong target. Everyone has like 99 interceptions so that stat is pretty useless, even ronaldo can intercept as good as kante.

AI havent gotten any improvements, its just as terrible as always.

Tactics dont make much sense

defending feels very wierd, the AI doesnt know when a player is trying to run in behind and sometimes it does, and its a mess to manually switch to the proper defender sometimes. tackling is very inconsistent even with 99 defending. 2man press is terrible they just follow the player and rarely tries to intercept or make a tackle when theyre right in their face.

Honestly the game as a whole wouldnt be so bad unless the keepers werent so op. You really feel cheated when you have chances that 99% of the time would result in a goal in previous fifas and IRL and the keeper magically saves it. For me this is one of the worst fifas ever just for that 1 reason because it makes it unplayable and even more frustrating than ever before.
If you want to buy fifa 22 you should do it for career mode because you can actually change the settings and mod it.

8/10 saved you the bother. I cannot imagine any other series that changes nothing get such a high score over and over. This is why IGN and GameSpot is viewed like crap when it comes to reviews and seek other alternatives.

The defensive AI seem really dumbed down in this game compared to fifa 21. Its really easy for teams to just walk through your defence..

Done with FIFA after 16 years of playing. For the last 8 years expected things to get better and everytime its been nothing but a big disappointment. Unistalled the game and I hope I dont touch it. Waste of time and energy. FIFA22 gameplay is basically score long shots from anywhere in the pitch. Reach the end line and dribble near the goal line and ground pass it to the penalty area for a tap in. The keeper dives in the wrong direction. Even the freaking AI plays it that way. All the goals in FIFA ultimate is this way. Also the insane ball dribble that seems like the ball is stuck in the players feet all the time to shield and toggle back and forth 8 to 10 times just on the penalty line until defender loses his grip and thats when you burst into penalty space to score. Watch the gameplay of the top players and its this same stupid routine. I used my PS only to play FIFA but now I need to find a better game. Games that dont come every year with bad work just to rob loyal fans.

On a new Fifa, Most reviews say, Pace has been nerfed or it's not everything again but after a few hours of playing the game, players always find how to exploit pace. This year will not be different.

People disliking positive reviews of FIFA games due to "it's samey" really baffle me. Many football fans want their FIFA games to reflect the updated team players in the clubs and national teams, so they need at least one FIFA game each year (hens the good sales every year). So incremental change is the only natural and logical expectation to have for each FIFA game. If the incremental changes are positive enough, the game will, and should get positive reviews and reception.
