I think part of the problem today is that most politicians are bound by a party platform, and thus can't even consider changing their minds about political issues -- at least not publicly. It's good because it makes politics easier to understand and more predictable/democratic, but it also means that two politicians debating can never perform much more than a display of empty rhetoric.
