This is caused by a worn support washer at the base of the spindle which causes the platter ring magnet to be too close to the screws below and catch slightly. Dead easy to sort... Remove deck base, remove black cap over base of motor. Remove support plate (be real careful of the foil-like PLL sensor disc). Theres a grey washer in the center of the plate (may be glued in place) which will have a dent in the centre if its worn or may even have become displaced. I replaced mine with a cut up piece of plectrum s-glued in place, but just check its similar thickness to the grey washer. You should be able to reuse the existing lubrication and smear some spindle side of your new fake support washer. Reassemble... Happy days no more grinding.

If you feel adventurous you can loosen the retaining screw of the sensor disc body and carefully remove which reveals the spindle retaining clip. Remove the clip and the spindle can be withdrawn (or it might fall out) from the platter side. Clean spindle and hub with alcohol. Lubricate with something appropriate. Refit. Deck as good as new.

I'm having the exact same problem with one of ST. 150s, except with both platters I've tried. Did you ever find out how to fix it?

I'm still having this problem with 1 of my STR8 150s. Is there a simple-ish way to solve it that doesn't require opening up the turntable and potentially making it much worse?
