Do you know how long the longest fast was? I always get people who freak out when I tell them that eating 6 meals a day is unhealthy, and they need to go to 3 meals, then 2, then 1 per day. They say they can’t go that long without eating.

Well, check out this man named Angus Barbieri. He was 27 years old, and fasted for 382 days. That’s longer than one year! He had dramatic weight loss; he went from 456 pounds to 180 pounds.

When he did this fast, he had medical supervision. He took vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. He consumed nutritional yeast, which I have long recommended. And you need large quantities of potassium to run your cells.

His bowel movements were ever 37 to 48 days. Of course! He wasn’t eating, so therefore he had very infrequent bowel movements. Mr. Barieri had very low blood sugar, but without the debilitating symptoms of hypoglycemia. You don’t need sugar in your blood if you’re running your body on fat fuel. Unless you’re experiencing consequences of low blood sugar, it’s not an issue. In fact, he felt really good on this program.

He did have high uric acid. But that was fine. Uric acid is a very powerful antioxidant. The reason why it gets elevated during a fast is because of the changes within your body. One is autophagy, which is the recycling of old proteins. You also get a boost to your antioxidant network, which helps repair and clean up old microbes. If you take enough potassium, that will counter the effect of uric acid because it will help balance your pH. So uric acid can’t hurt you if you buffer its acidic effects with potassium, especially potassium citrate. You can also put a little lemon in your water to help alkalize your body.

I put a link below to my interview with one of my clients who went from over 600 pounds to 230 pounds while fasting. It took him about 3 years. He eats one meal a day (OMAD) and has had great success.

My point is to show you just how long someone can fast and be very healthy. If you have enough fat to run your body, it’s a good idea to do period prolonged fasting. Although of course I wouldn’t recommend over a year unless you’re closely supervised. But if you’re taking nutrients while fasting, you’re fulfilling the purpose of food to provide nourishment. Just think about this the next time you’re trying to go 5 hours without eating. There are people who have fasted much longer.

It’s pretty amazing just how long the longest fast was!

I've lost 50 kgs (110 lbs) in 5 months by complete fasting. The difference is that I only drank water and didn't take any supplements; however, I felt better, but obviously weaker than I was before. I started eating normal food again (way less than when I started) for a couple of months, but continued to lose another 10 kgs (22 lbs). I was a depressed kid who had nothing to lose, so the mental battle was easy.

Fasting really really works... I was on 8/16 or rather 6/18 for six months then since the past four months on 2/22 or OMAD... Twice a month on 48 hours.... Started off with at 242 lbs in 2017 and now at a steady 170 lbs since July'18. Am 42 but feel like 21. Love you Dr. Berg. Bless you.

That was in 1966! A crazy idea back then . He wanted to loose weight so badly. 5 years after his fast he only regained 16 lbs. His first meal after his fast was a boiled egg, a buttered toast and cup of coffee. He said that after he ate the boiled egg that he was full, no kidding.
Sadly, he died very young in 1990 at the age of 50. I couldn’t find his cause of death.

I wanted to post my story on your website, but I keep getting an error. I started Intermittent Fasting back in June of 2022. I have lost right at 100 pounds. I do OMAD mostly, and I've done two prolonged fasts of 72-hours and 7 days. I am about to embark on a longer prolonged fast as I started to eat unhealthy again due to stress factors and have felt terrible. I feel a prolonged fast will get me back into the physical and mental space I need to be again. IF has changed my life. I am 59 years old and haven't been the weight I am now since middle school. I am off high blood pressure meds and high cholesterol meds. I need less sleep and have way more energy. The biggest change for me has been the mental clarity. I feel like my brain is going all the time and the way it was when I was in high school! I have watched a ton of your videos and they have helped me on this journey! I would love the opportunity to share my story with you. I would like to send you before and after pics as well.

just did 48 hrs, felt really good and after round about 6 months of 18:6 daily routine beginning to feel much more mobile, my joints were seized up pretty badly and had like permanent gout, slow but sure improvement, and drastic reduction in painkillers

My wife and I are just finishing our first prolong fast. 72 hours :) We typically stick to intermittent fasting but decided to give this a go. It was very interesting. We don't have very much fat at this point so going much longer wouldn't be the best idea in my opinion but we still wanted the autophogy and all the other benefits that come along with it. Thank you for all you do Dr Berg. :)

Oh my goodness it's like you're reading my mind. Every time I do a 48 hour fast I have a gout flare up. Now I know to increase the potassium. Thanks doctor!
