It's very important to note that the upgraded version doesn't have more range than the first one. In your clip, your character actually moves forward. Making it seem like it has more range, but it doesn't.

The standard versions of the dragon breath skills are generally preferred due to the cheaper FP cost and faster cast time. Sure the upgraded versions may do more flat damage but they can be unwieldly because of their cast times and costs. If the goal is to apply procs, both will do so with approximately the same amount of use, but the cheaper cost of the standard dragons breath spells will let you get them off more.

The upgraded breath can be held down mid air if your talisman is in your right hand or if you two hand it. Another tip the frost breath damage can be increased by using increased magic damage buffs

Update: you can hold down the decay while in the air but the seal needs to be in the right hand or two handed.

From some quick experimentation with dragon incantations:
(Regular version):
-Deals less damage
-Uses less FP
-Can be used from horseback
-Faster cast

(Named version):
-Deals more damage
-Uses more FP
-Can't be used from horseback
-Can be used from jumping position or while falling from a height (but must be used by Seal in right-hand)
-Slower cast

from my testing although the named breaths do more damage, the regular breaths do more damage per fp used

That mini boss has a weak spot on the head which you hit with the decay. That gave it that massive damage burst.

you actually can charge it in the air, but for some reason you need to use the seal in your right hand and not your left

I feel you factored out some important elements of these spells when testing them.

If you could’ve gotten a friend to invade you, testing which breath causes more Scarlet Rot buildup would’ve been vital, as that is the primary reason people use these spells.

Casting time I feel is also vital, as that often determines whether or not a caster can get the spell off in a fight.

Finally I would also test how fast the breath exits the dragon maw (as a sort of accuracy test when trying to hit a fast target, you would likely test this with an friend in your world providing a side view) as well as how long the cloud lingers (for more Scarlet Rot buildup).

People don’t tend to use these spells for their initial damage, they use them for the rot buildup.
