A documentary by Hans Hylkema about the life and music of American jazz musician Eric Dolphy. The documentary features his biographer Thierry Bruneau, people involved in his performances in the Netherlands and Germany, musicians, and people close to him. Dutch musicians in the documentary include Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, and jazz historian Michiel de Ruyter. Of course, the documentary also pays much attention to the music of Dolphy, black-and-white recordings (and photos) of Eric Dolphy, and shots of cities (Paris, Berlin, and Los Angeles) that have played a role in his life.

Eric Dolphy was the best bass clarinetist in the world. I never heared anyone in jazz or Classical playing it like him. A very incredible saxophonist as well. Completely, Original!!!

Thank you for posting this, I used to have a copy on an old VHS tape, long time ago. I haven't seen it in 25 years or so.

Jack Bruce once said that he and Ginger Baker had planned a free jazz trio, but they got the wrong Eric.

Breathtaking document from mostly a European point of view and a moving close to two hours with one of the eternal giants of any kind of music cut down too soon by untreated diabetes.RIP

Nobody has even come close to picking up where Eric Dolphy left off. You know it's him. As for the film, this is possibly the best documentary on jazz I've ever seen.

Eric is one of my primary influences and heros of woodwind doubling. My father, also a woodwind doubler, encouraged me to play alto sax and flute in addition to the clarinet, my first instrument.
Fifty years later, after having a successful career as the first call wind controller (Lyricon, WX-7) player in the New York studio music scene, I have continued to practice alto and sopranino saxes and flute and bass flute specifically because these instruments present such a continuous path of exploration and improvement. I play such “odd instruments “ as the bass flute and sopranino saxes because Eric showed me the possibilities of expression that playing different instruments can facilitate. Eric has always been my hero because of his total musicianship. I always tried to be able to read anything put in front of me, which proved to be essential for working in the studio scene,
I also practiced compulsively seeking to emulate Dolphy’s unmatched technique . His flute playing was inspirational to me due to his mastery of not only modern classical techniques but of the entire history of jazz improvisation. Eric’s bass clarinet and alto sax sounds are always instantly recognizable and riveting because of his unique ideas and unmatched technical prowess.
Thank you for this wonderful film, and I thank God for Eric Dolphy, his music has made my life more interesting and enjoyable.

This one of the albums that takes me beck to my childhood. Funny enough for some odd reason, I was fascinated with this strange and honky music..For hours long I would sit along outside and listen to my uncle's playing this music including Coleman from "An Evening With Coleman " An album that has disappeared from the face of the earth. This album changed the way I listen and interpret the music..My perspective of the music became consertive and I became cretjical to who I was listen to.. with the passing of time I started reading jazz magine frim Down Beat to International Jazz Journal to expand my comprehension of the music.Actual I grew faster than my age and I started running shoulders with older generation shop sharpened my taste of music subjecting me to blind fold test .This was another notch in the developing of the knowledge of the art to which I an grateful to. This album is very dear and close to my heart it actual define and change the course of my development of the follower and collector of the music.
