What is the Randstad?

The Randstad is the most crowded area in the Netherlands. It spans our four major cities: Rotterdam, where they earn all the money. The Hague, where they distribute it. Amsterdam, where they spend it. And Utrecht. Where everyone takes the train to get to those other cities.

The term 'Randstad' is first used by Albert Plesman, founder of KLM. He flies over The Netherlands in 1939 and sees one massive meadow with the major city on the Western Edge. EdgeCity, or Randstad in Dutch. And now that the Randstad has a name, we also have a name for that meadow: The Green Heart. Of course, the Randstad keeps on expanding. We might be headed for a green heart attack.

So, the Randstad isn't actually one single city. All these major cities actually compete with each other. Rotterdam and Amsterdam both have harbours, for instance. And local soccer clubs. But who knows, we may get a Randstad football club one day. We'll build their stadium in the Green Heart. Well, at least there's room for it there...
