This was recorded before Spotlight's "The Dark Reality of the Kidney Cult" shockumentary was aired on Channel 7 in Australia. It gives some background to the relationship between Renee Spencer and her daughter Ellicia (Ellie), and the defamation case Renee took against Dave Mckay. It also exposes some of the lies and distortions that appeared in the Channel 7 Spotlight program about the Jesus Christians.

What is "A Voice in the Desert"?

The purpose of A Voice in the Desert is to point people to the message, rather than the messenger. Most modern day prophets promote themselves more than the teachings of Jesus and the true message of Revelation. A Voice in the Desert challenges that error and more. Some of the things you hear on this channel may be difficult to understand, and may offend you. The goal, however, is to sweep away dogmas and traditions to reveal what Jesus actually taught.

Julie wrote a comment to me, but it is very long, so I am just going to deal with what she says one point at a time.

Feel free to respond, Julie: I just ask that you stick to the topic of each point, and keep it succinct. For an issue that revolves around me, neither you nor Renee have taken the time to actually listen to what I'm saying. I hope that changes now.

We have a rule that restricts posts to a max of 100 words. This is to discourage trolls who cannot think critically. It would be helpful if you could follow that, so that your whole comment will be publicly shown. Otherwise I will only be able to take quotes from what you write.

So, on to your first point. You wrote: "You are in a cult."

Julie, I wonder if you can even explain what a cult is? And what is your point in telling me that I'm in a cult - are you trying to offend me, or scare me?

The thing is, people these days simply use the word "cult" to describe a group of people whose beliefs they don't like (or don't understand). The word "cult" is used to imply "dangerous" and "evil". Just calling someone a cult gives them a bad reputation. But, in and of itself, the word really has no clear definition.

Anti-cult groups start with an unreliable assumption, and everything else stems from that. It is the anti-cult groups that cause people to lose their individuality because they claim the members have been brainwashed (a technique that does not exist), and the apparent victims no longer exist as people because they are controlled by their "leader". Whenever I say something Renee doesn't like, she says "that's not the daughter I raised". For example, on Spotlight's Facebook page, Renee recently wrote about me: "Sadly, as her mother, I’ve got say - that’s not the child I raised!..." And elsewhere she wrote about her meet-up with me: "Her lips were moving but McKay’s words were coming out." In other words, I could be there, by myself, talking with Renee in person; but if I don't say the things she wants to hear, she accuses me of being someone else. It's ridiculous, yet what I've come to expect from my attempts to communicate with her.

My request to you, and Renee, is simply this: listen to what I'm saying, instead of accusing me of being an un-thinking cult follower.

I'm sorry to hear about how bad things have gotten between your mother. Loving our enemies can be one of the hardest things to do. But it's also one of the most Christian things to do. And it's inspiring that you've all chosen to hold to your beliefs through all this.

As Christians we must be prepared for this type of thing, it is strong to know that a mother would prefer her daughter to be in prison than to be in a place with Christians who seek to put the teachings of Jesus into practice.

I may be missing something here, but it seems people who are opposing Ellie are being very bias.

The simple story is that her mother believes Lucifer is a good person, and Ellie is a Christian. That is doesn't seem like something that is going to be easy to process for any Christian.

Why are people making this about a person or a group when it is clearly a difference in beliefs?

Something that was said in this video is nagging at me. Ellie said that it wasn't true that Dave had more than others and she said that Dave lived the same as everyone else.

She then goes on to say that Dave sold possessions and moved out of his home in order to pay the defamation judgment made against him.

I was under the impression that all members lived by faith, selling or giving away everything they owned when they became apart of the group and that anything gained was communal and used to help the group.

Was Dave's pension diverted from the community chest in order to pay this lawsuit? Or was his pension previously being used to maintain his own personal property?

That doesn't seem the same as everyone else. Perhaps there is more to this i am not understanding.
