One Swedish king had plans to make moose based cavalry.
Moose being a lot hardier than horses and there being bloody loads of them in Sweden it made a certain amount of sense.

As a long time Final Fantasy fan, I have to mention the Chocobo like so many other commentators. But there is one mount even better than everyone's favorite giant riding bird. That is Rick the Hamster, first seen in Kirby's Dream Land 2. He is a giant hamster and utterly adorable.

No matter how much Nintendo tries to retcon it out of memory, those of us who were around for Super Mario World know that Yoshi is a dinosaur, that thing on his back is absolutely a saddle (not a shell), and he's the coolest mount (at least of the SNES era).

It's a shame we couldn't ride the Thunderjaws in Horizon Zero Dawn. Clearing bandit camps would have been that much more satisfying...
