Arjun Main Battle Tank - India's Modern Tank

The Arjun Mk.1 MBT has some design similarities with German Leopard 2. It utilizes Kanchan heavy composite armor, which is broadly similar to British Chobham armor. If necessary explosive reactive armor blocks can be added for improved protection. Arjun MBT also incorporates significant crew protection measures, including ammunition compartment separated from the crew with a blow-off panels in the turret bustle.

The Arjun Mk.2 is an improved version of the original Arjun main battle tank. It was developed in cooperation with Israeli defense companies. A total of 13 major improvements were made. After prolonged development the original Arjun Mk.1 entered service with the Indian Army in 2004. However the original MBT failed to impress the Army and improvements were required in order to make it combat-worthy. The new Arjun Mk.2 has improved protection, firepower and mobility over its predecessor. Trials of the Arjun Mk.2 began in 2012. It was first publicly revealed in 2014. Series production is expected to begin a couple of years later. It should replace the ageing Cold War era T-55 and T-72M tanks in service with the Indian Army. It is worth noting that it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a fleet of ageing tanks.

The Arjun Mk.2 has some design similarities with the German Leopard 2A5 main battle tank. It is claimed that this new Indian tank weights a whooping 68 t. Which makes it the heaviest tank in the world. It is even heavier than the American M1A2 Abrams or British Challenger 2. The Arjun Mk.2 is criticized as being too heavy. There are many problems with its excessive weight, such as limited cross-country mobility, limiting areas where it can be deployed. Also it is difficult to transport this tank to the front line.
Hull and turret of the Arjun Mk.2 were redesigned. Protection was improved by improved Kanchan armor. Also locally-developed explosive reactive armor modules were added. It seems that the new ERA is based on the Russian Kontakt-5 technology, developed in the 1980s and used on the T-90 and some other Soviet/Russian tanks. Armor modules counter APFSDS and HEAT rounds, as well as RPG rounds. Ready to use ammunition is stored in the turret bustle with blow-out panels. Other rounds are also containerized.

The Arjun Mk.2 is also fitted with advanced laser warning and countermeasures system which confuse enemy sensors. As usually this tank is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.
This new main battle tank is armed with a fully-stabilized 120-mm rifled gun, which is loaded manually. A rifled gun of such caliber is only used on the British Challenger 2 MBT. This gun is more accurate at long range comparing with smoothbore guns. It is claimed that during trials this new Indian tank outgunned both the T-72M and T-90. The Arjun Mk.2 is also compatible with Israeli LAHAT anti-tank guided missiles. Missiles are launched in the same manner as ordinary projectiles. This tank carries a total of 39 rounds, including missiles.

This new main battle tank is fitted with advanced thermal imaging and panoramic sights, and now has a hunter-killer capability. Fire control system of the new tank should have a hit probability over 90%, when firing on the move. The new tank also has improved communication systems and new navigation system.

Hope you enjoy!!

I remember all the Indian fanboys telling me how it shits all over the T-90 and how now India should give Russia a middle finger and mass produce Arjun. I told them that T-90 is almost completely localized, that Indian railways and bridges can't carry such massive tanks, how only one arjun can fit into a strategic transporter while T-90 can be carried by smaller Il-76 and they were calling me names and that having western parts makes it vastly superior machine. Now 4/5 of Arjun are unserviceable. I'm vindicated.

Well, I guess you can chalk up the Arjun's failure to, "The first of anything sucks." The Indian military industrial complex didn't know what it was doing when it came to tank design so they made all the rookie mistakes that one would expect. I never really expected much from the Arjun. I figured it was going to end up as a test bed and learning experience. The designers and manufacturers needed to talk with the military and get a proper handle on what the military expected from a homegrown tank. Their have been problems with government oversight (or lack thereof) which caused way to many delays. Barring some major economic crash India will eventually produce their own world class tanks but they will have to figure out how to source the components domestically and improve their program overall.

Why all the hate? At least the Indians tried to develop an indigenous tank, and for a country that is relatively new to modern weapons manufacturing it was a good try. Hopefully the design teams will learn from their mistakes and produce better equipment in the future.

I agree that Arjun lags behind compared to other modern western tanks. So please, freely criticize the tank.Instead everyone is spewing out hate against Indians in comment section. Hate from pakistanis is nothing new, but why are others being so hateful and racist towards Indians. Anyways, everyone has a right to his/her opinion. So go ahead all keyboard warriors and troll us Indians as much as you like, but just remember one thing:
'We Indians are making mistakes, we are learning and we will improve. And regardless of what all you haters say, if you ever visit India, we Indians will always welcome you and host you whole heartedly.'

I have a lot of family that was in the Indian army. From what my relatives say you have three options growing up, be a doctor, be a engineer, or join the army.

I'm not gonna lie. The brown, green, white color pattern makes it look like a giant lego toy.

This tank was made to fight Pakistan, and possibly European and American tanks, which they offer to terrorists to destabilise the Indian subcontinent. It has to be bigger, and have a bigger gun, to fight leopard, abrams and challenger, he is the desert Ferrari, no one can fight this giant in thar desert.

Not even kidding but I always thought India just bought tanks from other nations and that they never had their own. Now that's I've seen it is absolutely beautiful! And from the review it seems to be a very good MBT. Great job India!

As an Indian and somewhat tank history enthusiast I am proud of our effort to produce a MBT. It not only helps defense budget it also provides much needed employment to our people. Help from Israel, US, Russia, Germany are all appreciated because they have 100 years of experience with armor and we can benefit from their experience. We must remember that India and Pakistan are relatively new to this rising power status so our energy is high and have a sibling rivalry. We were once very good friends with china but there's a minor tension between us nothing discussions cant resolve. Lastly DRDO employs the best minds in the country so we will soon get a better product. Cheers to all modern and progressive citizens of the world.

This tank is dedicated for deserts. It's heavily armoured, has removers, etc. However it's too heavy for mountains.
