Gingko Tree Love Affair - Wisconsin Garden Video Blog #1037

As many of our viewers know we have a Gingko tree love affair. We planted our first Gingko Biloba (Maidenhair fern tree) in the summer of 1989 when our daughter Lace was a junior in High School. Since then we’ve enjoyed watching it grow. About 3-years ago we began propagating Gingko tree cuttings with success. Today, we will once again be propagating more Gingko cuttings using root hormone and planting the stems directly in soil. Then we will explore several 3-year old Gingko trees we planted last fall from both from propagation cutting and one Gingko tree grown from seed. You will see the 4th day Gingko update so you can see how the ones we just planted are doing. We will also include an update on our spring Montauk Daisies propagated from cuttings over a month ago along with other plants and treated conditions.

My rabbits ate my Stargazer Lily right off the tender top this year. I don’t have deer. This is the first year I can remember that the rabbits ate it. Those pesky wabbits !!! 🐇 🐇

I started my ginko from seed/nut sold at an Asian market (also available on Amazon). You have so many on your property! It's so fun starting propagations from mother trees. I tried camelia and hibiscus (multiples of each), but ended up with only two healthy hibiscus. Not always successful and sure takes a lot of our care. Good luck with this round of your ginkos! I may make mine into a bonsai - intro from Nigel Sauders-Bonsai Zone on youtube..

Hello Lynn and Richard. I really enjoy your videos, please keep them coming. That tree is huge 😍. What will you do if it is a female tree? 🤷‍♀️

I tried to propagate a Rising Sun Redbud tree but none of them made it. I used root hormone and placed them into a plastic container with soil. I kept them watered but I didn’t keep them shaded so maybe that was the issue. They started turning black and the leaves dried up. My redbud keeps getting little suckers at the bottoms so I will have to try again and keep them inside my screened in porch.

Do you know if the trees you are propagating are sterile, and if you think so, why? I recently saw another channel that said suckers from a sterile tree are not necessarily sterile. We had the unpleasant experience that lasted for months where a ginkgo produced a huge crop of fruit. Our neighbors had this tree and it was about 5 feet from our property line. Every time we came or went from our garage, walked to our back yard, took out the trash, went to get the mail, tried to sit on the front porch, it was a very intense odor of dog poop, cat box x 10. Thank goodness they cut it down.

I would love to buy a seedling from you guys if you’re interested in selling one? I live in Texas, so I can never get my hands on one. I’ve been wanting one to use for medicinal purposes.
