MS actually did a survey regarding the batteries and it came back as a majority preferring installing and replacing their own batteries over having a built-in battery

The more I look at the PlayStation and the Xbox the more I love the simplicity of the Xbox’s designs

The battery thing is probably largely attributed to durability. I've had to replace 3 PS4 controllers during my ownership but zero Xbox controllers.
