Bruce Liu - Rameau: Gavotte et six doubles, RCT 5/7

Victory at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in October 2021 turned Bruce Liu into a worldwide sensation. Deutsche Grammophon’s live album of his competition recordings was released to rave reviews the following month, and the Canadian-Chinese pianist became an exclusive DG artist in March 2022. Now Bruce Liu, "a pianist with a captivating musical personality" (Financial Times), has recorded his highly anticipated debut studio album, spanning two centuries of French keyboard music. The Paris-born pianist has taken a historical approach in selecting his repertoire, focusing on three French composers who played a central role in the development of keyboard music between the 18th and early 20th centuries: Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-88) and Maurice Ravel (1875-1937).

The album's title reflects both the nature theme that runs throughout the album and Liu's spontaneous style: "The sea is always changing," he notes. "And my approach to the music I play is never fixed." Since winning the Chopin Competition Bruce Liu has become renowned for his breathtaking, charismatic live performances. Recording an entire studio album therefore posed a different challenge, but one he has relished. “For me, it’s in a studio that you can really make your own puzzle,” he explains. “It’s like making a piece of art, putting everything together.”

Demeanor of Mr Liu
Please DG, give Bruce Liu the very highest reward in “Best of…….”.
because some of the latest recordings lack
these pianistic qualifications!
Good luck to you, Mr Liu!

Merci & mille Bravos Bruce❤;)

I like the way the fingers run over the keys of the pianos. Perfect without big gestures.

The beauty of the playing, such sublety of touch, organic growth from variation to variation, and lovely display of the left hand counterpoint, is complemented by gorgeous shots of the hands, and a splendidly produced video. I have loved this piece for 60 years, and a performance so fresh delights me as much as when I first heard it. Chapeau!

Jms

His musical intelligence and class astound one immediately each voice is calibrated here .His ears are as sophisticated as his technical equipment .His training shows but manyhave had his fortune there ; his individuality and communicative quality put him at the top. He may be the only recent Van Cliburn/Chopin comp winner to have a really big career [I realize now that the world is full of extraordinary players thousands with the technique of a Horowitz(his personality was starpotential as ws Michelangeli. Pollini raises questions for listeners who don't have the education to know what makes his special but emotionally unengaged playing a star-but the determinants of a big career ain't driven by that . Life is too big to comprehend .
