I am disappointed that Eugene fails to point out that in the 1950's, top marginal tax rates were 95%, with Capital Gains taxed at the same rate as Earned Income. College was free or near free, and unions were strong. The WPA and CCC assured that jobs were available improving infrastructure.

This is the counter to the Fascist scapegoating of immigrants and minorities. It provides the real explanation for what has changed.

It is a choice between socialism and barbarism. Perhaps we can get organized in time, but barbarism and random autocracy seem like our likely default.

Thanks BT & Rania, for another very informative and valuable discussions; narrowing the present world situation down to a struggle between capitalism and socialism is a good way for people to deepen their political and social consciousness in preparation for making real change for the better of all. Right now the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the biggest and strongest advocate for socialism, having spent the past four decades gradually subordinating capitalism to socialism. Americans especially should note that the PRC for all its authoritarian like shortcomings is now the only form of governance and productivity to at least resemble Lincoln's 1863 definition of democracy ie; 'government of the people, by the people, for the people'.
