There is no symbol of Islam. But the Crescent moon and star, the symbol of Ottoman empire. Pakistani flag has it, because the movement preceeding the Pakistan movement was the Khilafat movement. It's keeping alive the desire to go back to Muslim khilafat.

I could be wrong, but I believe the crescent and the star represent the lunar calendar, because we base the start of an Islamic month on the crescent sighting.

Crescent and the star, in the same shape as the Muslims use it, was a symbol of pre-Islamic Sassanid Iranians. You can look find it on all their coins. Look it up...

It makes sense to use that symbol actually, because there is a hadith in Islam that says ""Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will he be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!"".

I was always under the impression it became a Turkic symbol after the capture of Constantinople, and hence you see the countries that have the crescent moon and star have Turkic influences, hence the example of Pakistan, having been part of the Mughal empire, who were of Turkic amcestry.

The Moon and Star were originally symbols of Khosro Parviz, the Sassanid king. They were later adopted by Muawiya, the first Umayyad king, during the Islamic era, which was significantly influenced by the Sassanid Empire. In fact, his coins closely resemble Sassanid coins, which are now referred to as Sassanid-Islamic coins

Crescent moon and star was also used in Göktürk coins long before Turks came into anatolia.

I believe that we Muslims and Islam do not have any symbol. Our Prophet Muhammad ( PBUH) never said that we have to take the Crescent moon and the Star as a symbol. It’s all started by the Ottoman Empire.
It is not a must to put symbol on top of Mosque.

Muslims say they have no symbols. But they walk in circles, pray 5 times a day toward, and venerate a rock.

The cresent moon and star goes back much further than that. It has been a pagan symbol for thousands of years within the Arabian peninsula.
